I’ve seen friends from outside Sunderland today. Coming to Sunderland and looking forward to the Empire and the Fire Station.
Let’s celebrate SunLun so newcomers to our delightful city know what to do or where to go. I’ll start the beaches and Tunstall Hills. Next.

Miss the beaches so much I do. Exiled for way too long. Simple walk on the beach early morning does it for me. I settle for a walk along the river not far from me, which is a reasonable substitute at 6am, but not the same.

I’m lucky enough to live in Seaham where the beach is a ten min walk away.
Get back to Sunderland first a few days and stay down seaburn !

Funnily enough, I'm just back home from going to see Wicked at the Empire with the family. We all loved it. Had a meal in Aperitif beforehand and had a bit of time to kill before the show so had a wander down Keel and High St West. There was a real buzz around the fire station and Keel Square, plenty out having a drink in the Botanist, Keel Lounge and Fire Station. The old Argos block is fenced off ready for demolition and the old JJB sports building looks great with all the cladding off. Fantastic to see

I got off the train from Newcastle with some Leeds fans and walked up to the Fire Station, they were quite impressed with the area. Once the footbridge is open, and Bridge Street is avoided, it's going to be a really decent place for visitors. It's great to see Sunderland being brought back to life, the river should be made more of an asset imo. I stayed in Southwick, before the Luton play-off, and walked along the riverside to the SOL, fantastic.

It's nice to see a thread like this. For too long,even people from here moan and complain when something new is getting built here, "What do they need a new bridge for, waste of money", example. Its clearly all part of a bigger plan. The face lift down the beach, Vaux site development, new hotel, the sheepfolds, new metro station, the arty new carpark, depford road changes, Fire station etc. The film studio plans (hope they dont pull the plug on that).Granted we've had some pretty big loans to do it all, but who doesn't. It's about time we were on the map again.

Totally agree mate. The riverside walks are nice, then add in the Tunstall hills, the cliff tops from Hendon and Ryhope beach going on through to Seaham which forms part of the Durham Heritage trail. Then you've got Hylton castle dene, Silksworth sports complex with the lakes and man made hills, as well as the city's parks, like Barnes park, Mowbray Park, Backhouse park, Herrington country park etc. There's plenty of open spaces and wildlife to enjoy, a lot of it under rated.
