It was another interesting thing Mowbray said tonight seemingly trying to downplay expectations. He pointed out that if we’d lost our final two games of last season we’d have finished 12th, but we didn’t so we finished 6th.

It’s easy to forget how tight things were and whilst we all want progression I am nervous that people might end up overreacting to how much of a disaster it is if we find ourselves around 8th place for example. I know some people will hate this but I genuinely think a top 8 finish will represent a good season. And I just hope we make it into the playoffs. Will be tight all the way.

Said this to my Dad on the way to the Mallorca game. I'd be happy with top 10 this year.

Before the start of last season, in my head I would have been happy with the following...

Championship year one - survive
Championship year two - top 10
Championship year three - playoffs/promotion
Championship year four - promotion

We exceeded everyones expectations massively last year, but if we look at the bigger picture, a top 10 finish this year wouldn't be a failure. Obviously the goal is always to win every game, and win the league, why else compete, but if that doesn't happen, as long as we're competetive over the full season, and improve upon last season (not necessarily the position - as Mowbray put it, we could have finished 12th easily), then I'll be pleased.

I'm still just happy to be out of League ****ing One, and don't mind if we have to spend a few years at this level building a league winning squad without breaking the bank or the wage structure. I trust Speakman/KLD to build us that squad.

The future is incredibly bright.

We've had every other model. This one seems to be working well.

It has to be entirely collaborative. Management hires coach based on style of play they want, coach chooses what he wants in terms of attributes, recruitment and data team gives options. Together they come to a decision.
Although I'd guess Mowbray has already played his joker and insisted with Dack. As long as every move is fully justified by data and/or experience, it's fine. It's when one party starts doing their own thing that problems start.

Exactly mate, would I love us to spend millions on the best players? Hell yes…but not at the expense of club stability. And even then I would still want to stick with signing young players with an aim to develop them and sell them for profit down the line.

The Dack signing has shown there is flexibility in the model if the player can bring something to the table. I also really think we would spend a decent chunk on a single player if required, again if they were perfect for our model.

I’ve never felt more positive about the club setup than now, sure I have frustrations about lack of cover up front but we have been really unlucky with injuries.

Roll on Sunday :emoticon-0100-smile

How the hell are we supposed to sell an asset that hasn't played a meaningful game in 6 months, is still injured and has it all to prove when he does come back? Ha'way man, I know it's just your opinion but be realistic. As for his contract 'subject to fitness' it would appear he's been offered that and rejected it. He shoud be sacking his agent.
Your right

I've not read anything from the limited comments available that stoked any fires.

As I said yesterday, if at the end of the window we are still short we can complain / ask questions imo
The things that in my opinion were less than favourable would be:
  • Saying he wants, and thinks the squad needs, more experienced players but the club won’t entertain it. For a start we’ve just signed Dack so it’s not even accurate. Then it just completely undermines the club’s entire philosophy going forward. It suggests there is disagreement behind the scenes and exposes it. It distances himself from the model and responsibility for the squad. It implies the squad is fundamentally flawed and will remain so going into the new season, in his opinion at least.

  • Saying that if we’d offered Stewart what he wants then he’d sign the contract. I realise it was probably a slightly clumsy way of saying that he likes it here and wants to stay really but it just gave ammunition to the ‘just pay him what he wants’ and ‘KLD is tight/has no ambition’ brigade. Saying that he’s had players knocking on his door saying to give him what he wants because they all love him so much could raise concern about unity in the club and impact on the dressing room if he goes.

  • Saying we won’t pay what Everton want for Tom Cannon and have been priced out again plays into the hands of the same brigade mentioned above. He’s right but if he was presenting the club line then he could have said something about it not representing value etc.
  • Saying he thinks the club should have already have Roberts tied down to a contract and would have him on a ten year contract again undermines the hierarchy and suggests discourse.
All of the above is given with the caveat of that I wasn’t there and I’m only going off reports of what was said.

That's how I see it. Mid table upwards us okay by me. It's a tough league as always, we might do better and get a run at the right time.

Same for everyone I'd say, though if Southampton and Leicester spend their money well, they should do well. Should!

Anyone reckon we'll get someone across the line before the 12pm cutoff today?

Seems quiet.

Clear year on year progression isn’t good enough?
Just a view from me but people who aren't happy with where the club are of where they're going need to open their eyes. Compare us to Charlton for example - a club who beat us in the L1 playoffs a few years ago. Which club is on an upward trajectory and which has Charlie Methven doing his thing?

I wonder if anyone who is knocking KLD are just immature kids. Either that or they're so caught up with the way Newcastle are doing things that's what they want. It's not what I want. I want our club to have solid foundations and continue to make great progress.

I'd advise certain others to find some joy. We've been one of the best teams to watch in any league. How brilliant is that?

Normally pretty relaxed, but this sort of stuff doesn’t half piss me off. Bedwetting already? Most excited I’ve ever been as a lads fan, can’t believe some don’t see it. Just enjoy it ffs
Im the same, i think weve made some good exciting additions to the team and we have time to add the final pieces to the team by the end of the window

OK, in order of your points

Point 1 Depends on how the comment was reported by people there and what was actually said. It read to me like in discussions they have said they would prefer to stick to the model

Point 2, clumsy IF it is taken at face value, bit also shows the squad have faith in Stewart and he's not being a bell end with a bad attitude

Point 3 I believe the term he used was "astronomical". These will be the same fans who didn't want to pay for Simms as it was far too much money, but would bite their hand off to have him now he's scored a coupe in pre-season

Point 4. Manager in singing the praises of one of our best players shock.

All depends how you wish to read second hand comments posted by a penguin on twitter

What’s really annoyed me is people now being revisionist about what happened last season to play in to their narrative that the model isn’t fit for purpose. Saying the recruitment’s success rate isn’t very good, that it was a weak league, that we were a couple of defeats from twelfth, completely reliant on Amad etc.

Last season was about as much fun as I’ve had watching the lads and about as proud of them as I have been in my life.

It’s a joke mate, very odd. If they can’t enjoy it now after the years of **** we’ve been put through, then they have no hope at all. I am buzzing for Sunday. Can’t wait to see what this season brings!

Agreed, it’s why I added my caveat.

I’ve no issue with what the club are doing in any instance above. As I say, my only issue is that I’d prefer that Mowbray presented a united front, didn’t undermine the hierarchy and was less self preserving.

He could have praised Roberts to the hilt in numerous ways without implying the club have done wrong by him.
