I’d probably argue that this deal for Lucumi IS a change of sorts. One of the most expensive signings in our history on an older player who we could sign a contract with in January for nowt. If he’s an absolute star then it doesn’t matter. But it’s most certainly a big commitment - and to me I don’t see the need to chase this one so hard (with the bid going up and up) at this exact point in the window. Bologna are going to start feeling the pressure very soon.
They’ve already said if he fails to find a move he will sign a new deal so they won’t lose him for free

I think it’s a weird one. Ultimately I’d say that the numbers DON’T work for us. We as a club don’t generate the money to sustain this many £20m signings naturally. This summer is a one-off shot due to us being promoted. It will add debt to the club and mean that we ‘have’ to make more transfer profits down the line. So for me it’s essential that we get it right - and don’t hinder ourselves for the future. Most on here would (and have) told me that it’s not a problem and we have to push to the limit to give ourselves a chance. However it’s only not a problem until it becomes a problem. If this lad is the difference and plays multiple prem seasons at safc than it won’t matter as I say. I’m certainly hoping he’s worth it!
That’s just the risk you take with a model like ours in the premier league. It’s the model but at a bigger scale. Some of these players should become 50m+ players if they do well

The trip to Hearts is expect to see a gradual shift away from that approach, with Sunderland now starting to focus on that opening day game against West Ham United. Speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Sporting on Monday, Le Bris confirmed that he would now start to reduce the game time of those on the fringes of the XI and who could yet leave the club either permanently or on loan before the end of the transfer window.

Id imagine there'll be a lot of outgoings over the next week

Have they? We’ve also seen reports that suggested he was unlikely to sign a new one iirc. I guess that’s where the crux is then. I’d be surprised if he was saying that to them tbf. Completely removes any leverage he may have to get a big move this summer.

Yeah at least the latest report has said he will likely sign the deal on the table if a move doesn’t materialise

I think they accept he wants to move on but the club want a good fee

While it’s the risk you take, it also erodes what you can achieve if you keep chasing deals and don’t drive a very hard bargain throughout. I’d also argue that the margins of error at pl level are different. Getting outgoings as a champ club is easier. And while the potential returns at pl are a different level, the stakes are higher too. While many on here have Caicedo type deals in their heads, they represent the high water mark. The last thing we need is to be forced to lose good players to teams in our mini league because we chased deals the year before.

I guess it’s a good sign if Lucumi is quite that generous to his current club. Not many would be. Wouldn’t like it if we were on the other side of such a scenario - although you could argue that with Cirkin and Neil we already are!

I'm saying there is any truth in Jesus link, but years ago didn't we try and get him on loan years ago?

Fits it with the rumours at the start of the year about him wanting to leave if they didn't get into the Champions League. If they'd failed he'd have used it to justify leaving. Them qualifying just complicated it.

When you add in that they have no director of football now, Mitchell leaving after a year, Dan Ashworth after 2 years after being put on gardening leave for months and rumoured to have wanted out after a year and they've no CEO, it doesn't look good. It doesn't look like there's a clear strategy, too much time taken on transfers without closure and token low ball bids being put in. Now their star player wants out, it makes you wonder who else could be angling for a move. A club's fans should be concerned over stuff like this, but as it's the mags, f@ck 'em.

They might be feeling a bit aggrieved, but what can they do?

They are all in on the Saudis. They will be looking for someone else to blame for any and everything that might not be just so.

Criticising the owners has long been their default position, always seeking to drive them away. Now, they are frightened the owners might go away!

Came on here to a mountain of pages of people bickering over nothing.

More to life than that lads. Found out this week my wife has a large tumor in her spine, she's only 36, **** knows what happens next.

Just keep it sensible boys and girls, we all want the best for SAFC.
That puts it all into perspective Paddy. I hope and pray that all goes well for you both and your journey over the coming months isn't too harrowing.

Yes. But there is nothing yet saying we will go to the limit. And all the other buys have been young lads. If we drop, it is very hard to see at least a couple of them not enhancing their reputations. They will all have resale value.

I don't think it inconceivable either that other Income streams will open up in this new phase of operations.

We'll be okay. No way do these guys spend over four years doing quiet building, and then hoy it all in on a tip at the bookies.

Jesus mate that's tough.

Strength to you and your family and hope the docs can sort it for your missus.

That’s horrible news. Stay strong and I hope all goes well for her.
