What do we think...

Is the recruitment reports and targets Speakmans and Harveys? Or

Are the targets the new recruitments?
According to Sacha the Belgian journalist speaking on WMS today. Ghisolfi has been handed the keys to this window and the signings coming in are mostly to do with him.

I think it’ll be a team effort but he’s 100% the factor in these French, Italian and Belgian markets

Onein shouldnt even be a consideration to sell imo. He will have a lot to contribute (maybe more in the dressing room) but will defo start some games and be important off the bench in others if we are hanging on. Not saying he shouldnt be upgraded btw.

For me, I think the lads just a good footballer. People think of his background, him being a midfielder, being short and not that quick so doesnt look like a centre back, but it irritates me at times because the lad was overall excellent last season and was in the top 5 players of the season imo. Our defensive record was pretty solid, Alese and Ballard couldnt stay fit, and Mepthams form dropped, Onien had some off days but was rock solid pretty much the whole way through. He was also the main point of starting attacks under RLB and you could see the impact in the first 30 minutes of the final when he went off and RLB realised he had to switch Ballard and Meptham for us to get a foothold.

If we stay up, I do think this will be his last year here though. But imo he's done enough to get a testimonial at Sunderland and if he got one, I would absolutely be attending. One of a very few bright lights during the worst period in our history was the signing of Luke Onien. I really look forward to seeing him wear our shirt with a Premier League badge on it.

Love this!

Would love him here. Quality player
I think he will play loads for City this season, turning him into a RB arent they

Mental that we are now throwing these names out and they don't actually feel impossible to pull off

Of course these types of deals are so hard to do but I look at players like Harvey Elliot and think 'yeah we can get him', that's mental for a newly promoted side that hasn't played in the PL for 8 years

I still don’t believe we could get Harvey Elliott at this stage. He’ll be playing European football next season and rightfully so imo

i was pretty much in line with those who were worried about onien and VAR, despite the fact that he had proved himself well capable at the back that 'ruff n tuff' style of defending was scary looking at VAR.

then we got the play offs and i did mention it at the time, i think we saw a different onien, he held himself back and never gave the ref an option but still defended with his life...i get the feeling he is much smarter than many think he is and he knows how much he can push (or not) and keep doing his job.

there are question marks with all our players at the minute, they all have to prove themselves in the premier but i think onien is pretty much certain to do a top job.

above all else, he is exactly the type of lad you want around the squad, he will sell the club, the city and the people to any new players better than 'the management'.

Depends how much a midfielder likes being told he doesn't have the composure to play there and needs to play full back I suppose. Especially if they buy someone else or Ait Nouri means they end up playing an Akanji type at right back so he ends up being reserve RB.

We arent signing the likes of those 2 surely

I'm of the opinion on O9..the lad loves playing..for him to play a bit part is not fair on him. If he has the chance of regular first team football elsewhere, he should take it... He will always be a legend at Sunderland, nothing will ever change that..but I would hate for his career to fade away at Sunderland not playing
I don’t think it would fade away, he will want to prove himself and I’d be amazed if he didn’t back himself to be playing regularly this season. If he’s not I think he’d leave to get games.

It's an unlikely deal but I don't think it's impossible

As with all deals it'll come down to who else is in for him

I don't he starts regularly for any of the top sides in England and I think he will want regular 1st team football. The German teams could be a threat tho, he would be unreal over there

As i said hard deal to do but def doesn't feel impossible

Matheus Nunes. Loads of Premier League experience, played out of position since Nico arrived. Also a massive lads fan weirdly.
Pretty cool, didn't know that

....On supporting Sunderland as a child

“My stepdad is from Sunderland, so when I was growing up in Brazil, we would spend every Saturday or Sunday morning watching Sunderland’s matches.

“It would be in the mornings, because in Brazil, we were about four hours behind here in England, so in the weekend, every morning we would spend watching Sunderland on the TV.

“But it wasn’t only Sunderland, it would be all of the Premier League and the rest of the teams as well, so since I was a little kid, I have been watching Sunderland and the rest of the Premier League.”

I think the main competition is those ‘not threatened’ clubs though

Could easily land at Fulham or Brighton

I never want O9 to leave. And I can’t imagine he’ll ever want to leave. He offers way more than just his ability on the pitch.

Sums it up perfectly for me.

O9 is a prince among men, an absolute diamond who bleeds red and white.

Fully deserves to be rewarded with a new improved contract.

Surely mcatee would be more likely

It is true. Everyone at his school wanted to be Ronaldinho or Ronaldo. Nunes wanted to be Cattermole! <laugh>

I'm not really a massive fan of McAtee but he's English, versatile, a couple positions we need, young. So I couldn't really pick it apart if we did go for him.
