I do share this doubt, I just wonder why they wouldn't reference the other reports that have said its NOT close. They must think it is. Or its just very carelessly clumsy from James.

He doesn't have to reference them all individually. All he'd have to say is that "some reports say its not as advanced". Would be an easy tag on to any of those sentences.

exactly, they've chosen to report on the ones that say it is close and the mirror this morning

saying "is understood to be close" would make zero sense to add too, unless he is being clumsy

I'd have expected them to say "but some reports say its not so close" if this was simply their commentary on the rumours.

Not saying that this ISN’T close; but that reads like a compendium article to me. Additionally Copley is generally online page filler - apart from his stuff on youth teams. If this was genuine direct info I’d expect it to come from Phil Smith.
