Don’t get this. We’ve already spent £20million on Enzo. I think if we thought value and profit to be made we’d spend over 25 for sure.
I agree we could and would but that pool of players that you can sign for 25m+ that you can make a profit on that will also sign for us are probably quite few and far between. Which is why I also agree it’s unlikely
Not sure on that, there’s a lot of players would go in that price bracket who would be 26 and under and potentially develop further. Bear in mind we fetch a player to PL for £30million and he adapts, doesn’t even improve, he’s immediately going up £10million plus. You get a find from Ligue 1 who settled quickly and you’re printing money.
it can also go very wrong though. £30m is a lot on a punt. I think we absolutely could go there but on balance I just don’t think we will. £25m feels about where I think our biggest signing will be.
I don’t think we’d be taking a punt at £30million. There’s very good players still a good age at that level, lots of them. We have the draw of the PL we still seem to be forgetting this.
Absolutely not forgetting it. I’m just saying I don’t think we will spend £30m + on a single player. only one way we’ll find out
Seems Celtic are after him would they have the advantage just with their history with Japanese players?
We need variety imo. I am not advocating possession based all the time ala Southampton. But we cant play 38 games on the counter. It is one thing challenging championship teams to break us down, quite the other premier league teams. And defensive pace is so apparent in the prem. For me we have to develop a style for a % of games which sees us controlling a degree of territory. We are never going to have 65% possession next year at any point, but we have to find a way to give us enough of a foothold, particularly at home. It is imperative we create a hostile atmosphere for away teams and for me that comes from being more front foot in our play. I remember Henry being in awe of our atmosphere, that has to be something the club seek to tap into.
Serious question (I don’t know the answer). Has any newly promoted premier league club ever spent £30m or more on a single player? I know there’s a first time for everything. With the right scouting I’m not sure we need to risk so much capital on one player. There’s plenty good players out there we can get for £20m
Fees have rocketed though. £30million is almost big standard for a decent player now. Without low contract of sell on. Southampton and Leicester both went close to £25 million more than once last season didn’t they? Ipswich 3 over £20million.
Thought it was nearer £30m. He is an example though of how a promoted team can land top talent, even from other prem sides.
