To be fair, Defoe had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave on a free if we got relegated. Not sure which idiot agreed to that, but he could have decided to stay with us and bring us back up....

I don't have an issue with him leaving at all, but let's be clear - he did have the option to stay if he wanted to (although the club would have probably forced him out like they did to Pickford)

Lee Congerton. The same man who put Rodwell on £70k per week with no relegation clause.

To be fair to Defoe at that time, he was a regular in the England side and would have been in contention for the World Cup squad a year later. Being in the Championship then woukd have ended that straight away, so I do understand it and as you say, we'd probably have flogged him to get him off the wage bill anyway (like Vito Mannone).

Initially I was a it pissed off and felt he'd left us in the lurch, but if we're being honest with ourselves he wasn't anywhere close to being the player we knew and loved. I think I'd have been more pissed off if he'd just taken the money and sat on the bench for 3 months, contributing v.little
Fair point.

So where does Gooch play, personally I dont think he is good enough to start a game in any position at this level, but I know I am in a minority, and he has some die hard supporters, what they see, completely escapes me.

right now i have no idea, but he has his better games in a more forward position on the right...once he stopped trying to do far too much when he had the ball his overall play was better, i have always liked the fact he tries different things so defenders are never sure which way he will go.

such players will always lose the ball a few times, roberts and clarke, when doing similar, get applause while gooch gets slagged off...it seems our 'homegrown' players just HAVE to be included in the first team while young but after a couple of years they just HAVE to be sold on as not good enough.

clarke and roberts at present do bring more to the team, maybe that is why they get applause, i just do not see why gooch gets pelters at times...i do agree with many though, he is going to have to up his game now in the championship, 'being useful' is not what we want a team based on.

He is very quick mate, and strong. He is obviously a cracking finisher as well. He can play the link up stuff, but we might not see him dropping deep like Stewart. Very much a number 9, from the bits I have seen.
Thanks mate. I may be slightly biased but I think we would be the perfect place for Delap this season.

I'm with you on this, Clocky. I thought it was best for both parties that he moved on in the summer. His delivery into the box is usually poor. He can be like a headless chicken when he's running with the ball and he always looks like he has mistake in him.

I don't see it with Gooch.

Is Delap available for loan? I thought he was following a similar path to Foden and I expected him to be in and around the first team, this season.

PARROTT - Frustrating but likely he'll get more game time with Preston. Stewart will always start games in this system. Both Parrott and Spurs will want him playing every week. Ellis Simms would be a target for me. Broadhead carrying an injury still.
That's the problem we have, trying to sign a striker that know they will play second fiddle to Stewart, not many premier league clubs will want to send someone out on loan to be a part player

Hasn't it been mentioned that AN wants to go for 3 at the back that lends itself to 2 up top

I’m still enjoying the Turkish weather and been dropping in and out of here trying to keep up with what’s going on. Some panic seems to be setting in amongst a few, we have around 5 weeks to go before the window shuts and I reckon we will use the whole window to make sure we get the best deals. I’m sure if Parrot & Broadhead don’t come off we will have others lined up. I agree we are short up front but Stewart has proved he is robust and rarely injured, he’s a unit ! Im sure he can hold his own until the right players arrive. Personally I am more concerned about centre midfield, I think we need a real quality player in there.
I get we kick off on Sunday and it would be great to have them in beforehand but there isn’t a lot happening in the championship so I think the real business will happen towards the back end of the window
