Don’t know if this has been said previously so apologies if it has but just seen a tweet about how the contract offered to Wyke isn’t what he expected, it’s clear we didn’t want to keep him. He doesn’t play the game we want our strikers to play. The contract was purely offered because if he accepted its a good plan B to have a man who can get on the end of a cross. I don’t get the panic about not being able to match Wigan. For me it seems crazy to spend £10k a week on a 3 year contract for a player who relies so heavily on Mcgeady. Chances are Mcgeady won’t be playing in 3 seasons either so the reality is you’d then have to spend another £10k on a player that can put the ball on a plate like Mcgeady did. I’m not taking away Wykes contribution from last season but you have to play a certain way for him to work. He made us very one dimensional and we very quickly got found out. I think it’s best for us to move on providing we spend the money we are saving wisely which I am confident we will do.
He wasnt even offered a contract which is encouraging

if two schoolboys teams were having a match and picking who they wanted from their classmates one by one Wyke would always be the last chosen

Whilst I’m not bothered he’s not signing, using the McGeady stat again and saying he relied so heavily on him is utterly ridiculous. Mcgeady exceeded his assists record last season, so surely that means he’s going to struggle to make goals without Wyke? Otherwise the “relies on McGeady” thing is a redundant argument.

Managers ex-managers, commentators , pundits, ex players have all said “these 1 touch finishes are fantastic goals” throughout the Euros. Why is it different for Wyke?

What Wyke relied on was the ball being put in the right place. Centre forwards have relied on that since the dawn of football. Suddenly it’s a negative thing people literally usd as a stick to beat Wyke with!

Truly not upset he’s gone as I think we already have better in Stewart, but come on, every player who scores a goal made by others is relying on the others.

I think the point is that McGeady is sheer class for League One. He will create for whoever. Wyke relies on a delivery into the right area. He won’t get as many chances without McGeady’s brilliance.
I don’t mind Wyke leaving. He doesn’t fit the profile and we definitely need goals spread around.
I’m expecting total football next season. :1980_boogie_down:

Purely in terms of numbers, the way I see our first team squad make up is below. My point is that whilst we all want to see lots of signings and that we've lost lots of players, I do think more need to go or be loaned out for us to bring in as many as we want / need.

Squad last half of last season ---> Replacement this season (from a squad perspective, not like for like)
GK
Burge ---> Burge
Matthews --> Patterson / SPACE if loaned out
Patterson --> Carney

FB
McLaughlin --> SPACE
Hume --> SPACE
Vokins --> SPACE

CB
Willis --> Younger / SPACE if loaned out
Xhemajli --> Xhemajli
Wright --> Wright
Flanagan --> Flanagan
Sanderson --> SPACE

CM
Leadbitter --> SPACE
Power --> SPACE
O'Nien --> O'Nien
Winchester --> Winchester
Scowen --> Neil

AM
Gooch --> Gooch
McGeady --> McGeady
Jones --> Embleton
Maguire --> Hawkes / SPACE if loaned out
Diamond --> Diamond

FWD
Wyke --> Grigg
Stewart --> Stewart
O'Brien --> O'Brien

The squad above is obviously supplemented then by the U23s including the new lot just signed.

Weather in squad or not he was on books. We're also threadbare in all areas. Striker along with keeper are most important areas of team. If we're relying on Stewart imo were risking promotion. Obrien we know isn't up to it and should look to loan out if we can't sell. We need a quick striker with movement alongside those being linked.

I completely agree with you - I'm just offering the counter argument which the club is facing.

3 years... not sure I'm too happy with that but good to get somebody through the door and he could be brilliant

perhaps not as advanced as he suggested... personally I wouldn't like a flat 3 year deal for him without any break clauses. Would rather a 1 year contract which automatically extends by a year a couple of times if he makes 20 appearances for example

If that's correct and he's done the medical, surely it should show if he's up to playing 46 games a season if required, then I suppose it's down to the length of the contract the club want to offer

It's like we've learned nothing from past dealings. It's early days of course and this isn't confirmed as 3 years but if true I'd be concerned moving forward

The medical will show if he's fit enough now to play 46 games. It won't be able to show his mental capacity and pain threshold etc to play 46 games. And a lot of the criticism of him from Huddersfield fans has suggested he didn't have the best motivation to play.

Will of course give him every opportunity and a fresh slate, and think he could be a great signing. I just don't want us tying ourselves into a long term deal for a player with his record.

Countless players have "passed" medicals here and been crocked fir months at a time. I'll judge after December but this sounds increasingly risky, especially listening to Huddersfield supporters.
