People will look at Pritchard and say "no goals in 37 games for an attacking midfielder?"

But that's the whole point of using data to identify players. If he'd scored a tonne of goals he'd still be in the championship, or other clubs would want him. The data analysis is tonnes more sophisticated than a wikipedia check.

The fact that he has massively underperformed from a goals perspective is possibly / hopefully masking the fact that his underlying performances have been good.

This is what "moneyball" is all about.
Rumoured to be at the academy now

100 % mate and then you get the comments, 'if he's coming to us rather than the championship he must be finished' club can't win with some fans
If he signs it's because he is ****, finished and no-one else wanted him
If he doesn't sign the club have ****ed up again and can't even compete with <insert team name here> for signings FFS and KLD is no better than Donald etc

I know people want to see him in midfield, but his signing effectively reduces the number of squad players we need.

We only really need to sign three full backs now rather than four. And we possibly can even do without an extra back up centre back, knowing that we have either Luke or youth products able to fill in an emergency,

This frees up budget to be spent on better elsewhere.

think he would compliment Stewart quite nicely.
Not so sure personally, just seems like a direct replacement for Wyke which says to me, getting the ball wide and lumping the ball in at every opportunity. Thought we'd go down the more dynamic style of play this season, more athletic. Hope I'm wrong obviously. Also, I hope Onein gets away from the utility tag and just filling in whenever needed. He's needs to be a centre midfielder, we need to sign specialist full backs and centre backs, imo of course.

I've just seen that all the press down in Portsmouth that we are signing Pigott is based upon Kevin Phillips' quotes to Football Insider (who else?) that he'd become a legend if he signed for us.

I think the rest of the country must assume that Phillips has a clue about what's going on at Sunderland

Think we need to see him in one position only. We've younger and others from u23s to fill in at the back imo

He's a very good right back at this level. His signing saves us needing a second right back. should still be signing a first choice one.

He's a very good midfielder from the bits I've seen. He's got energy pace and winds the op up too. We've got youth team for a reason time we used them instead of shooting ourselves in the foot imo

Yeh I'm not saying he should be our back up right back. I'm just saying his versatility is a huge bonus above and beyond simply him being a good midfielder.

The club referenced his versatility in the press release so nobody should be surprised to see him filling in as needed. Although hopefully he gets longer in midfield.

If we keep doing that we shouldn't be surprised to see a disjointed side with no relationships built up. If a defender is injured of suspended a defender should come in for him nit a midfielder imo.

younger has proven himself worthy of at least the 'back up' slot so i would hope to see decent right and left sided defenders/wing backs in and see onien in the middle...he never stops running, he can wind players up, he can tackle and break up play and he will literally throw himself at anything in the box whether trying to score or to help his own defence, obviously not privvy to the club data but i dare say he has at least one of the higher rates of 'ground covered' stats.

cant say i have taken enough notice of piggot but hopefully he is more mobile than wyke and that will compliment stewart imho, two mobile (faster?) strikers rather than one, mainly stagnant 'put it on the end of my foot/head' type striker should allow for many different tactics.
