Great signing! Saw Gillingham last year and thought the guy looked good. Gillingham friend of mine says he reckons he's every bit as good ability and potential wise as Butland, except he suffers as he's not English - so the hype isn't as big around him. A really dominant and loud goalkeeper.

To be blunt, we're now at a level where news of our transfers actually merits coverage.
Yeah, obviously very true, but people used to think if a transfer story got in the papers Nicola would call it off. Wonder how many people still delude themselves that's true.
If we really want someone then I doubt NC would call it off because it was made public, but don't think he would like it if anyone tried to force his hand by broadcasting stuff. There's a difference between it leaking out and an agent or manager discussing it. Bet he didn't like Buttner's agent saying everything is all sorted and it's back in Saints hands. Also notice that the JRod rumour went very quiet when it was getting to the crunch,
They go quiet before the signing because there's nothing to report. The papers report interest, bid made, bid accepted, player in talks, and then there's a big gap where nothing happens for a few days (or if the player is on holiday in Mexico, a few weeks!) and they have nothing new to add until the official announcement is imminent.
I'm sure Cortese would prefer to do everything in private, and obviously he isn't the one blabbing every detail to the papers, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think the club talks to journalists.
