Apart from flops like Gareth Bale, Phil Jones, Kieran Gibbs, and Kyle Walker, to name a handful. Maybe not in teams near the bottom, bar Jones as occasional flanking defender for Blackburn, but if anything it shows that they can thrive in better teams, and that they are a sought-after commodity who can often break quickly into the first team. I say get in there, Saints. And would agree maybe give Richardson his shot first of all, particularly in our opening fixtures.

Bale is a winger, Jones hardly ever plays fullback, Gibbs is overrated. 1/4

Kyle walker is also incredibly overrated, although I will say bale broke through and was a regular in the side at left back.

He's still decent though so I'll count it. Far from the best RB in the world as some people claim.

Bale broke through for Spurs as a left mid, too. His "breakthrough" game was against Arsenal and he definitely played left mid then.

He did, however, move back to left back, and was.. er, dropped for being very poor defensively. Then came back into the side as a winger.

Okay I understand we're getting a little wet over the prospect of Clyne, but I feel a couple of people need to be brought back down to Earth. He's not comparable with Bale, alright? You can't say "well look how good Bale was at this age, why not Clyne?" Bale is the best left-sided player in the world. Clyne, I'm afraid, does not come close.

God, not whining and arguing again are you, Joe?

Think you could fall out with yourself in a phone box.

People do not need bringing back down to earth as you so put it, we are all entitled to think differently; hence the forum.

I for one think he would be a positive signing - after all, who do you expect a newly promoted club that are one of the favourites to go down? Dani Alves???

We're not comparing him with Bale, we're just providing a counter-example to your assertion that age is all-important.

I never said it was all-important, mate. You're making stuff up now. I'm arguing with a ridiculous notion made yesterday that "age means nothing". I've said that players improve with age, and rarely are good enough to defend in the Premier League at 21. World-class players like Bale obviously are an exception, though as Dan said, he's been far more of a midfielder.

AGE IS A FACTOR.

I never said it wasn't a good signing. Go away.

How do we know he is not good enough - he has never been given the opportunity to play in the Prem so that is a flawed argument.

Age is not a factor.

When I was a child watching football, it was always near-on unheard of for a player under 22-33 to get in the starting line up.

Over the years, this has obviously changed, therefore discounting your theory of age ot being a factor...

But, you are entitled to your opinion, which i will of course respect.

Christ, what is wrong with people these days. It's like listening to a playground argument. An opinion is an opinion, get over it if you don't like someone elses.

Bale broke into Spurs team as an extremely young LB (the discussion doesn't relate to each of those players and their age and playing position today - rather whether fullbacks can break successfully into a Premiership starting 11) ; Jones did still play FB at a very young age, despite being CB predominantly (possibly even harder to justify at a young age) at Blackburn; Gibbs still played for a top four team at LB, whether or not you rate him. Infact, that strengthens my argument rather than yours, because if he's not even that good and still plays LB for a top four Premiership team, stands to reason that even weaker young fullbacks can break through and succeed. You would probably have been better off pointing out he was only cover for Clichy when he broke through, but regardless, I stand at 4/4.

Man Utd and Fergie were rumoured to have been looking at him not long ago. I can't stand the bloke but if Fergie thinks he has potential then thats good enough for me.

I can never understand why people dislike Fergie. I think he's hilarious.

Yeah, he switched and got two assists at some point, I remember. Regardless, he made it into the team as a LB, until Assou-Ekotto took his place back and he was shifted forwards. The point of this argument is not that they have to be rated by posters on this forum, though, or even good fullbacks - when did that come into the equation?? They were starters in the Premiership in a fullback position (or in Jones' case, an occasional fullback).
