It seems that there probably won't be any new signings for the next couple of weeks.
That takes us nearly up to the first game of the season.
I think we've let about 9 players go so far, plus all the loan signings from last season. And one or two are going out on loan.
On the incoming side we have four new permanent signings and one new loanee.
It may be that we are planning to run with a smaller squad than last season - we used 34 players, 16 of those newcomers, 14 making 10 starts or fewer.
Personally I'd like to see the number of players used this season as low as possible, but I'll be surprised if it's fewer than 30.
These are the numbers of players we've used in the last decade (per season);
2012-13 ... 32
2013-14 ... 35
2014-15 ... 32
2015-16 ... 37 (relegated)
2016-17 ... 33
2017-18 ... 33
2018-19 ... 29 (promoted)
2019-20 ... 33 (relegated - season interrupted by COVID19)
2020-21 ... 33
2021-22 ... 34
No coincidence I think that our for best season in that decade we used the fewest players.
And the next best seasons of 2012-13 and 2014-15 (both mid-table in the Championship) have the next lowest numbers of players used.
We need around 8 more players in (in my opinion) and it looks like we won't get most of those until we are already playing the opening league games of the season.
Ben Garner has his work cut out for him.
It's going to be important to get off to a good start with what we already have.
Last season by the time we had everyone we were going to get until January, Charlton had lost 5 of their opening 7 games.
