Just how good is Lawlor anyway? Despite lavish praise from Bellamy and a couple of spectacular solo "headline" goals for City, in all honesty he's just a good prospect who's had a stellar initial first team season as a youngster. In reality, he's an appreciating asset who has a distinct financial value to the club.
Lawlor has a few mistakes in him as we've seen. It'll take plenty of game time to knock off those rough edges. Game time he'll get with us.
It's why I said to give him another season. He'll be more rounded a player. Or, his progress could stall.
And, heaven forbid for his sake, he's only an injury away from us getting nothing.

Whatever we do, we mustn't waste it either way, player or cash.

You're right about the Swans as well. They've steadily churned out £5-10M players from their accademy. We've produced nothing of that calibre since Ramsey.

Go on then - what's your opinion about his future - or more importantly, as it reflects on the future of CCFC?
He’s clearly talented and has potential if he stays fit to be a mainstay of a higher placed team or possibly abroad and the national team for a long time. Whether yet he’s got what it takes to be a PL player is debatable as he’s still developing his career; he’s certainly the best defender who has come through the ranks for a long time.

He could do with a Sean Morrison type next to him. His ability to dribble and pass the ball forwards is such an asset. I can recall a couple of beautiful assists from his long passing last season.

If BBM is to fashion a team capable of challenging for the top 8 next season he should be looking to Lawlor amongst others to be an integral part.

Alfie Mawson?
Yes that will be him. Fulham paid £16.85m in August 2018. 48 appearances.
Loaned to Bristol City September 2020. Loan ended February 2021. 11 appearances.
Free transfer to Wycombe Wanderers August 2022. 20 appearances.
Retired February 2023. Persistent knee injuries.
Have to say that was good business for the Swans

Certainly a great cash coup for the Swans but I don't think Mawson was "home grown" though. Unlike Joe Allen, Ben Davies, Dan James and Joe Rodon who raked in about £60M between them for Swansea.

We've done no real business at all since Ridsdale grabbed at the bargain £5M lifeline from Wenger for Ramsey to pay the Revenue. Since then our academy output in terms of bringing through players and cash generation has been pants.

Home grown or not, besides the accademy, they've picked up a few bargains and sold them on for big profits within a year or two. Puts us to shame.

To be fair, the Wurzels are similar too, Alex Scott is now on the verge of being an England international and they've also churned out some very good/solid players in the past including Semenyo, Joe Bryant, Josh Brownhill, Adam Webster etc. whilst also having some notable loan players go on to good things too.

Sadly our lack of development has been as a result of too many short term decisions being made, trying to gain instant success at the hands of experienced, but dyed in the wool "old school" type managers, even going back to the likes of Dave Jones. No-one has really wanted to trust the academy in the last 20+ years until now.

Some great comments and insights on here. Swansea have, indeed, kept themselves alive for a long time off the back of their academy. But I am not sure there have been (m)any recent big gains? Meanwhile, I have great expectations of our academy, going forward. Maybe it is a false expectation but something seems to be going right there. Call me Pip, if you like!!!!

Champions League scouts reported to be watching Lawlor.

Chelsea saying they want a Kellyman loan sorted quickly.

I'd still like Lawlor to have another season with us unless someone offers silly money.
We would hopefully be top of the list for a Kellyman loan. We were responsible with his workload, we're up a division, he knows the club, the players and the manager.

Just hope Chavski don't think he needs a different club to broaden his experience.

I guess the loan fee will be higher than last season.

City sensibly tied him down to a 3 year contract so can play hard ball on price if there’s a bid for him.
A good call by us, and interestingly he was happy to sign it.
He could easily have taken the king's shilling, let his contract run down and pocketed a hefty signing on fee sonewhere.
Whatever he signed, I hope it was mutually beneficial.
With the business with Ng and Bagan along with other youngsters, we have a good foundation for this season and the next couple.
