Don't begrudge him moving at all but it is still telling that he wasn't willing to give us one year to help us get back up. Wonder if he would rather be at Saints now as a legend of the club, up there beside Tiss (imo he would have been close had he stayed and got us back up) or just another player at WH.

Tbh I think he already gave us just one more year before in other relegation battles. He could have and I’m sure was in two minds about leaving before he did. Sure if he had stayed he’d be a Tiss level club legend. But he’s still a Saints hero for me.

Allowing Baz straight back into the team as #1 in the PL would be akin to committing PL suicide. We need a better goalkeeper.

Absolutely. Even if he wasn't injured, I'd want us to go looking for an upgrade.

I'm fine with him sitting on our bench once he's recovered, but he can't start.

Newcastle apparently want Ramsdale, which could make Pope available. Total opposite of Bazunu though, so he may not interest Martin.

Christ he’s a good keeper though. Hopefully this brief stretch with Macca in goal has shown RM how very important that is.

Let me put this out there - IF we get Downes is he an upgrade on JWP? Free kicks aside? Tricky one for me as JWP was a machine, but so is Flynn?
Different roles I would say. We wouldn’t be able to get him back but if we did we’d play Downes, JWP and one other. I don’t really consider them like for like. JWP isn’t a “6”.

I have said before that I would like to see more power in our midfield, players who can put themselves about, have pace and the ability to run with the ball.
I like Smallbone a lot in the 8 role and, to a lesser extent, Aribo but I see them as being bench warmers in the Premier League because they are on the lightweight side of things because of their lack of pace and power.
The last few weeks has shown how much difference a mature and experienced keeper can make to the back line.
McCarthy made me feel comfortable when we were facing corners and crosses, because of his height and strength to push through players to get to the ball, plus I think he is a better shot stopper than Baz, who I don’t think is a “natural/instinctive” keeper.
Lavia on loan to regain fitness? No idea what really happened to him. Or Broja for that matter. Chelsea have really messed up some players. I know Broja got a bad injury but he should have been loaned to help recovery

He was loaned to Fulham.

Where does he really fit in the current set up? Does he take Armstrong’s role? He used to play more like Alcaraz who arguably doesn’t fit in the system we play. But Brighton seemed to play him further back. He has some bridges to rebuild surely ?
Does he? His exit could have been handled better but he still stuck with the club in League One and the Championship.

Gosh shows how much attention I paid to the premier league. He didn’t do much there it seems. Probably should have had a whole season somewhere but I expect their striker injury put paid to that. Nkunu wasn’t it ?

Yeah, takes the Stuey role, but a bit more technical. Also said he wanted to start a coaching career at club level (he’s been working with England) and be closer to the family so that makes sense for him. Good veteran presence who knows the PL with a couple of different clubs now.

“Could have been handled better” seems to be a pretty big understatement. Not as bad as Lovren I guess. But that seems to be a matter of opinions I remember the animosity to him among the fanbase. And it seemed to continue a while.

Can he even still cut it in the premier league. Bit part and useful experience I guess. All depends on the nature of the deal I guess

Well we haven't replaced Theo's role in the dressing room yet. <laugh>

I think it's pretty clear that Broja will be available this summer (Chelsea love to sell an academy player). And after his failed loan spell at Fulham (I don't think that was his fault), he may not have a great deal of PL interest. But what level of transfer fee will Chelsea want, and what level of wages will he want? Either or both could be too high for us.

He still has a circa £20m value on transfermarkt and four years left on his deal. If they don’t really want to sell that will double the price usually. Too much for us given his form and injuries I expect. Before you even get to wages

I think the main academy sale from Chelsea for ffp purposes will be Gallagher as that will get them the most. Do they have many others who can fetch a high price ?
