Wonder if we can do some complex deal with Chelsea about Mara going to Strasbourg and us getting one of their players on loan
If we’re so hard up for cash, why just a loan. I appreciate he wouldn’t bring in a huge fee, but Mara won’t contribute to us staying up. The extra money from his sale going towards a player that is currently just out of reach might.
If we don’t make a profit on him (which we wouldn’t) then it goes down as a negative in PSR anyway, so wouldn’t help us in that respect. Unless you mean we just don’t have any money in the bank full stop Maybe they still think there’s a player there, the club could think a full season playing as the main striker could make him
I meant for PSR reasons! I think we have money, just can’t spend it within the dumb rules. Surely we barely paid anything for him? And could make a small profit and wages off the books. I think he would have shown more last season in a lower league if he was ever going to make it with us personally.
Yeah the question is whether we have a cashflow issue or an accounting profit issue. Or rather - do we have both rather than just the latter
Apparently we got conned for €11.5m. Farcical. But this means that we need to sell him for more than €6m to register any profit at all. And only amounts over that will be useful. So it isn’t happening
Balls. That’s more than double what I assumed we paid I suppose if he had turned out any good then that would have looked a bargain, but as it goes, it’s just another blot against our recruitment.
And here is the issue with the shopping in the market we are price wise. Most players at this level are that price for a reason, for every gem at that price there are probably 10 duds. So consistently finding the gem is virtually impossible
I think that included add-ons and a sell on % which we won't have to pay because Bordeaux no longer exist. Selling him in this window would benefit PSR as we will have paid 3/4 of the transfer fee already. Still, I think we want to loan because we do think he has potential. Plus if he has a decent season in France then his value will go up.
10m for a player that can’t perform at championship level. Jesus the value of money has changed so much.
He was a viewed as a young promising player when we signed him who hasn’t kicked on for whatever reason, the same with a lot of players we have signed. It happens especially if you are shopping in that price bracket. To emphasise the point I guess Brighton are spending £30m on a 20 year old German winger called Brajan Gruda, he has played 30 games in the Bundesliga scoring 4 goals. Not exactly ground breaking and he probably won’t play for Brighton with any regularity just yet. We are trying to sign players for half that price who we need to come in and be starters (and good ones) right away, it’s very hard to do.
I remember when we signed Gaston for 12m, that was a huge fee at the time. I know there’s been a fair bit of inflation since then but premier league inflation is insane.
How do teams in Germany, France, Italy and Spain do it? +90% of those leagues are not spending £30m on players like Gruda and would be a match to most PL teams outside our despotic overlord clubs on the pitch. What's the transfer record for a German club which isn't Bayern (or maybe BvB)? PL teams are - often willingly it seems - getting fleeced because many can afford to, which inflates the market for players heading to these shores. I'm surprised we haven't been sniffing around the Dutch and Austrian leagues again.
