We've not fared well with "veteran strikers" over the years.
Might suit the warnock way though.
Wouldn't worry about his age or his ability to put the "mileage" in - Murray is the complete opposite to Niasse.
He can just sit in the final 3rd and will score for any club given the service. There have been questions about him lasting the full 90 minutes but he can do more damage in an hour than most front men will do playing until the ref blows the final whistle.
He has the knack of putting the ball away whereas others (Niasse for instance) are all bluster and no end product.
I’d have him like a shot.

Scott Johnson is recommending the benefits of Charlie Austin on WoL. Aged 30, a bit of a sick note, played for Warnock before and wages a limiting factor. Possible loan signing if Southampton subsidise his wages.
Most effective in the final third (doesn't do much covering back) and knows where the back of the net is. Overall record of a goal every two games.
Another one with a criminal record so would be banned from the current tour. Likes his tats.

Bluey - it's a question of whether we're going to set up for this season (which seems the obvious choice) or invest for the future.
Unfortunately as we've seen in the past, quality young players want instant access to the Premier League and seem unwilling in many cases to work through the Championship to get there. Unless you pay extravagant fees and wages, you'll get turned down.
At that point it's a question of what you've got left that's available to you. Realism is the answer, and if you can obtain a proven goalscorer who wants to play on and is not just looking for a pension, then Murray and Austin are the sort that will get thrown up.
Personally, I'd take either right now at the "low millions" figure unless Vince is going to go for broke with big bucks, I just can't see tha happening in the Championship.
All fair points Sparks. The gambles for both mentioned are fitness and continued desire to perform. With Lambert the first was the main problem and we never got to find out about the second.
Murray has played 35 games and more in the last 3 seasons so has the better fitness record despite being nearly 5 1/2 years older than Austin. Also Austin was out of favour at Southampton for a lot of last season. Murray has a strike rate of a goal every 2.5 games which he has maintained over the last 3 seasons. Austin has dropped to 1 in 4 in the same time.
On the face of it Murray is the better option if he stays fit but at nearly 36 that is a big question mark.
Either fees or wages costs or both will be major considerations for both.

The problem with spending big bucks is if that player will fit the game plan. Its easy to spend cash, difficult to find value for money.
I understand planning for the future, and in a number of areas we have players of the right age, but there will always be exceptions.
The risk, as in Blue's list, is the proven goal scorers don't fire for whatever reason.
Murry for the right price would do, so long as we can shift a few on.
Brighton local newspaper now reporting our interest in Murray. Might just be piggy backing WoL's headlines though.

If the two clubs could agree a figure, I bet Murray would come for a two year deal given he'd be out of work this time next year with them.
He'd probably also accept a lower wage guaranteed for two years and play, rather than worry on the bench about his future.
Beat me to it Remote. Also only played 66 games in last 3 seasons with a 17 goal return. Not impressed.
If he'd take a lower salary, I'm sure there could be some goal / promotion related bonuses that could be built in.
