Hull City are hoping to take their summer signings to eight by the close of play today with the club closing in on two more arrivals.

Grant McCann has prioritised strengthening his defence and midfield, with no outgoings expected on transfer deadline day.

A loan deal for Everton defender Matthew Pennington could be the first to be completed today, with the 24-year-old set to follow Josh Bowler in making the move from Goodison Park to the KCOM Stadium.

Having spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town and Leeds United the year earlier, Pennington provides McCann with the Championship experience he was searching for to add to his defensive options.

City had hoped to add to their midfield options with the capture of Doncaster Rovers captain Ben Whiteman, tabling a substantial offer on Tuesday, which was immediately turned down by the League One club.

McCann had planned for a reunion with Whiteman, an attack-minded midfielder, but the hope that a deal can be done ahead of the 5pm deadline is beginning to fade, with City exploring other options which are understood to include Wigan’s Leonardo Lopes.

Huddersfield are leading the race to sign Fraizer Campbell, apparently he's had offers from them, West Brom, Boro and Preston.

It'll come down to the coin on offer (maybe his last 'big' professional contract), talked to him last week in Huddersfield, his preference is his hometown club. Currently training with Brighouse to keep fit. All the best to the guy, shame we couldn't keep him based on last seasons performances and goals, he'll be missed
