Add 11 goals in 19 games in the Copa Libertadores
    91 games and 39 goals.

Also I've gone a bit further into looking at that 32 goals in 56 games thing and looked at his form, because it's always good to factcheck...

Domestic League - Serie A and Gaucho 1 (the regional league for Rio Grande do Sul):
    Last 30 games, 12 goals.
    Last 60 games, 30 goals.

Continental Matches - Copa Libertadores, Recopa Sudamericana, and the Club World Cup:
25 games in his career, 14 goals. 6 in 10 in 2012 (inc a hattrick against a Bolivian team called The Strongest).

National Team - only friendlies (Brazil have no world cup qualifiers):

    17 caps, 3 goals.

    Overall:

    Last 30 games, 10 goals.
Last 60 games, 26 goals. (Including the Olympics).
Last 60 games, 22 goals. (Excluding the Olympics).

And for his last 56 games in all competitions, 22 goals, so I'm not sure where the 32 in 56 comes from unless it's a typo.

So all in all, obviously his scoring record isn't crap, but it's far from what you'd expect from people among the best in the world. Obviously, scoring record isn't everything etc etc, I'm not trying to argue Damiao is a bad player, but it justifies the former Napoli president's comments and should highlight why I'm not particularly cockahoop about spending a very large amount of money on him.

Well that depends on how strict a definition you're using. It could easily be argued that any international striker is among the best in the world, considering they're almost certainly all within the top tenth of a percent of all who play the game! If you're looking for the 20 best though as someone else said, then I think he'd have to be at least close to that.

Frankly whether he is in that group or not, it is pretty hard to argue that he wouldn't be a player of considerable value to us.

Here's the stats I'm using by the way: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/leandro-damiao/leistungsdaten-detail/spieler_139449.html - national team at the bottom

No. I think what you mean is we should have bought him.

I misread the stats I was looking at - he's started 12, so yeah, fair enough.

I can't see him being anywhere near the 20 best in the world, to be honest. I'm not saying this with any justification because I've not put detailed thought into it, but even 50 might be a bit of a push.

He'd be of considerable value to us in the way he'd probably help us improve, which is why I'm not against the signing, I'd be happy to see him join. I just take issue with those claiming we're signing a player who would walk into Champions League sides etc. I feel people are expecting far too much, and though people getting on Gaston's back is little more than mild annoyance at the moment, it'd be significantly worse if Damiao disappointed.

Don't be a nob, as I have said before I am dyslexic. So give the correcting spelling mistakes a rest.

Beef meant we should have brought him to Southampton, so was correct. Well I'm sticking with it anyway.

We could have brought him down from Norwich then bought him for the team.

Depends partially on whether he's getting those goals solely from open play; I can't find anything indicating whether he takes penalties (I believe that Andres D'Alessandro is their primary taker), but that tends to skew goal-scoring rates pretty significantly.

I'd think Forlan would take penalties too - I can't remember ever seeing Damiao take one. I'd love to see us get D'Alessandro if he was 5-10 years younger. Like when Portsmouth had him.

Sky Italia update on Leandro Damiao...

Damiao had two contract offers. One from Southampton and one from Napoli. He has chosen to sign for Napoli after speaking to both clubs.

    Understandable.

I don't think he's one of the best strikers in the world (if we're assuming that means top 20) but these days £20m doesn't really get you one of the best strikers in the world. You're looking at double that for the very best strikers. However, by the sounds of it he's probably the best we could possibly get right now and other things seem to fit. It's quite possible he'll take a season or so to adapt to English football but we still have Lambert and by the time Damiao's adapted Rickie will be at the age where he's more likely to accept a bit-part role. The fee might be a bit steep but I've already accepted the fact we're going to have to pay over the odds if we want to sign players that bigger clubs may be interested in.

There's also the possibility that, regardless of his performances on the pitch, he could be our mini Robinho. If we could get the current Brazil number 9 at the club then a lot of other players may be keener to sign up. A deal is surely a long way off though.

Hmm...where to next? I'm all out of ideas where a striker could be coming from.
