Calm down, calm down.

I was making the point that Saints fans with a grasp on the club's history know that we are NOT perennial relegation strugglers in the top division.

I believe our average final league position in the top flight is something like 12th or 13th.

He's got a point. I think people on here/in England regard him higher than the rest of the world does, and let's not forget Napoli were Serie A runners up who will be looking to replace Cavani, it's not too damning to suggest Damiao isn't up to that.

I see it as more as he is saying Damaio isn't good enough for Napoli then Damaio isn't good at all.

Yeah, it seems to me he's saying "he's got a load of potential that he's not realised yet, and the Brazilian league's defences aren't very good anyway, I think Napoli could do better".

Yea, as has been said, Napoli are a massive club and are in CL again next season. They need the best strikers in the world and Damiao wouldn't be on a list of everyone's top 20 lets say.

But they aren't attractive to the best strikers in the world. Otherwise they would have just kept Cavani.

I'm still not so sure I'd like to see Leandro here, so it doesn't surprise me at all that Napoli fans reckon they can do better.

There's no way they could compete financially with PSG, in terms of wages, nor turn down a €63m bid. It's good business.

Well quite, and Damiao is a regular for the Brazil side that have just won the confed cup (which were it for it injury he would have been at), and was top scorer at the Olympic football tournament last year, ahead of Neymar. He may not be Cavani and he may not have fulfilled his potential yet, but he probably is amongst the world's best strikers.

Okay so he performed well at the Olympics, but so did Moussa Konate and Oribe Peralta, so I'd hesitate to call him one of the best in the world on that. He's also only started 10 games for Brazil (and only ever played 90 minutes once) so calling him a regular is possibly a bit of a stretch. His scoring record in the Brazilian league, which definitely does have weaker defences (it's still a concern for Neymar, the Confed Cup alone isn't nearly enough to completely dispel criticism of Brazilian football) is relatively poor - 28 goals in 72 games - obviously not a terrible record, it'd be good if he was playing in England, but, he's not. It gets better when you include the crappier tournaments Brazilian teams play in against considerably worse opposition, but 28 in 72 in the Brazilian league isn't really enough to say he's amongst the world's best, is it? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's crap, I think he'd be a good signing - just maybe not for the money stated, and I couldn't really justify saying he'd be among the best in the world. I don't want our fans to keep up the impression we're signing someone who could walk into any team in world football, and bang in 20+ in every league, because at the moment, he's really not that good.

I think Leandro's club scoring record is a bit better than Wikipedia says, as those stats haven't been updated since March. Someone on Reddit told me he's got 32 goals in his last 56 games.

I thought the same, but ESPN's stats and Soccerway's stats back them up. The Brazilian League structure is quite complicated, teams play in regional leagues that are full of crappy teams so I'm only going on the Serie A stats.

2012: 19 games, 7 goals
2011: 28 games, 14 goals
2010: 25 games, 7 goals
= 72 games, 28 goals.

In fact he's started 12 games for Brazil, and out of 17 caps in total that's a pretty good ratio. Started all 7 of the games he played for them last year which shows he's considered a regular when fit I think.

He'll certainly have a lot to prove if we sign him, but if you're a regular starter for Brazil, which as demonstrated he is, you can't be that bad.

I do think we'd be one of the best clubs to bring out his full potential.

I can't find where it says 12 - I've got one place saying 10, one saying 8. It remains to be seen if he'll be a regular when competitive games come around - granted, he probably will be, but still. I'm just struggling to understand how he can be seen as "among the best in the world".
