Squad numbers

I expect Jakupovic to take the No.1 shirt simply because he's a permanent signing. It doesn't mean he'll actually be our number one.

I don't even know why squad numbers interest me but they always do.
I'd expect much of the same although I wouldn't be surprised to see Simpson take back the number 23 shirt and hand the 11 to Aluko.

Same with me. There's realy no good reason why I should care, but I just do.

Agree that that Koren one seems a bit funny if true. It's not like anyone else would want the number 10 either if Fryatt wants to keep 12.

It just wouldn't make sense that Koren's number would be 7 because that means Stewart is changing his number, and if Proschwitz is 9, that means maybe McLean is 10...

Oli - 16
Koren - 7
Proschwitz - 9
Those are for sure

Eh up how's that then?

They are the numbers the players put on their autographs when they signed them when I was at the traibing ground

Agree. If players have a preferred number, they are usually offered it (Fryatt's is 12, not sure of the significance though), but outside of that it's usually just the ones that are left over. The players already at the club usually keep their numbers (Think Garcia was an exception last year because he didn't know if he'd be playing for us or not). I heard a rumour when we signed Geovanni that he wanted number 78, but apparently the club said no. It's common in Italy and Brazil to have high shirt numbers, simply because they don't give a **** about it. I don't really mind who has what number, I know a lot of people whinge about high squad numbers but it's honestly not that important.

I mean, Derek Riordan played for Hibs with the number 1 shirt and he was up front.

From memory, John Eyre said that when Mannone joined he wanted 60 something in honour of his father but he wasn't allowed as Football League restricted the numbers from 1-49.

Well someone asked McLean what number he is and he said 9

Aaron Mclean ‏@A9Mac
“@hullcitygirlX: @A9Mac What number are you again? Ha” 9

McLean is 9, he said on Twitter earlier. Also, some players may want 'rude' numbers such as 69, I'd imagine people like Giggs and Rooney would like that by the amount of shags they've had over the years. <laugh>

Ah, fair enough.

Maybe this means Koren 7, Proschwitz 10 and Stewart 11, with Simpson to possibly... who knows? 17, or 23 like I said earlier.

Well as another example you could make all your strikers take the No.9 in there number. 9-19-29-39 and so on. Normally the players at the club keep the number they prefer.

For what its worth i expect Ben Amos to take the No.1 shirt. So maybe Jakupovic will be given the No.21 shirt. See what i did there ?

The only numbers the top three keepers should wear is 1, 13 and 22. End of.

Historically its been a goalkeeper number. Third choice keepers in world cups etc would almost always be number 22. I cite the England '86 world cup squad as proper usage of squad numbers;

1 GK Peter Shilton
2 DF Gary Stevens
3 DF Kenny Sansom
4 MF Glenn Hoddle
5 DF Alvin Martin
6 DF Terry Butcher
7 MF Bryan Robson (c)
8 MF Ray Wilkins
9 FW Mark Hateley
10 FW Gary Lineker
11 MF Chris Waddle
12 DF Viv Anderson
13 GK Chris Woods
14 DF Terry Fenwick
15 DF Gary A. Stevens
16 MF Peter Reid
17 MF Trevor Steven
18 MF Steve Hodge
19 MF John Barnes
20 FW Peter Beardsley
21 FW Kerry Dixon
22 GK Gary Bailey

Note also 4 as midfielder and 5-6 as central defenders. That's proper.

I love this post. Sqaud numbers, even though they mean **** all in reality, have always interested me and I agree with what you're saying.

18,27,29,30,31 left for new signings then.

Coincidence that Elmohamady's favourite number is 27?

Seems weird that number 18 has been left free? Who is that for? Why not just give it to Bruce who is 28?
