Problem is we’ll be 5 points behind Forest and 4 behind West Ham by the end of Monday (thanks glasner!). Pointless including Chelsea so that gives us 4 games of which we will need to win 3.

The players have left it to late to seemingly start giving a ****.

I’ve been done for a while anyway to be honest. I’ve resigned myself to relegation for weeks now.

But moments like that will just still piss me off. There was a glimmer of hope today that maybe, just maybe we’ll begin to dig ourselves out of this ditch we’ve buried ourselves in but then a moment of idiocy just somewhat reminds us all of exactly why we’re in this ditch in the first place.

I’ve tried to be so positive, bantering about things with family and other Spurs fans and even fans of other teams. The Forest game was such a let down but we were so abysmal it was almost easier to write off.

We had this game, the three points and a desperately needed lift for fans and players, in our hands today and just ****ing threw it away, and with that, the doomsday clock ticks a minute closer and the turning point we so desperately need to get around moves a week further away.

It’s the hope that kills you.

I have been convinced we were down since the west ham **** show....but despite today's gutting result actually think we might have a small chance...

Until it’s mathematically impossible then there is always a chance but I’ve not seen anything to suggest they can avoid relegation. This never ending poor league form isn’t just a blip, it’s been crap over 4 managers and a over a couple of years now

So here it is ...

If the Spanners do not lose on monday, Wolves are relegated.

Which means their game against Spurs is
nothing more than the chance to try and take
Spurs with them.

One thing that was obvious today is our passing already looked a lot more comfortable than it has in...anyone want to pitch a timeframe?

While some can be pinned on the rejigged personnel especially in midfield, it's hard not to come to the conclusion that the training videos under De Zerbi heavily feature passing drills, something I do not recall being so apparent under Frank or even Ange

On the subject of passing, if somebody could pass the bellends racially abusing Danso on his socials into the nearest body of water, that'd be great

Dont disagree re our league form but today was a massive improvement...sensible formation...sensible tactics...adaptable in game management...and the fans responded brilliantly...not that thatll be mentioned as they love to portray us as negative

Sadly I expected that to happen.

Danso ****ed up big time but he didn’t do it on purpose so doesn’t deserve any abuse let alone racial abuse.

Deflated but that was a better, much mich more solid performance. As HBIC pointed out passing much better and midfield improved. Bentancur made a huge difference for me and it was noticeable with the drop in quality when he came off. If, and it a big IF, he stays fit there is still a glimmer. But...

I too was resigned to it after the Hammers game but who knows. Of course it would be ultimate Spursy to only beat Chelsea in the run in and go down....

Bentancur did better than I expected, but I don't think he added any more than Palhinha, who did well when he came on.
Gallagher played well and worked his socks off, but equally Bergvall was lively and d set up the 2nd goal.
Poor Kev Danso is getting slated, but a single poor touch was just about his only mistake in a tough game. Porro gets a good goal but his awful positional defending cost us the first and Bissouma had at least a dozen **** touches, some of which could easily have led to a goal. He gets a free pass. Life isn't fair!

Spurs played much better and were marginally the better side overall in the game.
But de Zerbi is shuffling the pack, just like previous managers. So many changes of personnel all the time - which makes it hard for the players to gel as a team.
Simons gets a goal and an assist (both real quality) yet he didn’t play at Sunderland (except for the last few minutes). Why?
Spurs still seem disjointed - relying on moments of individual quality or being undone by individual mistakes.

We've been like that for a very, very long time.

The difference was that for 3-4 season, Kane and Son provided enough moments of quality to outweigh the mistakes.

Without that shield, every single mistake is fatal, which has been the case since the beginning of last season.

I'm surprisingly calm after that.

Almost certainly because I fully accepted relegation over the international break. It is my default assumption that it will happen, so if it doesn't I will see that outcome as a massive and unexpected bonus.

It's in moments like this that everything that can go against you, will. Bonkers refereeing decisions, individual mistakes, everything is so costly.

But it is important to focus on the bigger picture. The season started today. Forget the previous 32 games. They came under useless managers stripped of key players through injury.

Next week is a must win, and it needs to be a massive, convincing win. Not just a win that notches up 3 points, but a win that also provides a boost of confidence.

The trip to Villa Park will be bloody tough, but we'll possibly have Maddison back in the team by then which will be a massive boost. And they'll have more than one eye on their game against Forest. Win that and they've basically won the EL which Emery loves and let's be honest would be huge for them, even in the highly unlikely event they drop out of the top 5 as a result... they'll get CL football via that trophy anyway.

Then we have Leeds at home who are essentially safe.

It could all look very, very different in three games' time.

And the only reason I'm able to be this optimistic is because I have fully resigned myself to the fact that we are going to be relegated and it will happen at Stamford Bridge via a 97th minute Connor Gallagher own goal <laugh>

Agreed - and it is a huge IF like you say - if he can get anywhere near to his pre-ACL form in these next 5 games, along with trying to get Maddison into the side, then chances of survival go from 1% to about 15%, still not great but a marked improvement.

On their days, two quality players.

Forgot about Gallagher, as I felt Bentancur's presence allowed him to do a bit more of what he does. Possibly his best game so far.

Poor Kev looked distraught at the end and it was just one of those things. I agree that for some reason I feel there is a huge amount of twists and turns to come yet before this is all over. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it go to the final game of the season...

As much as I've slammed them over the years, Bentancur especially, whilst they are several miles short of CL quality, they are also several miles above relegation quality, which could make them game changers. That has been the real difference for our rivals down here. Players like Bowen, Gibbs White, Anderson etc. who are way too good for the Championship and also playing like they're way too good for it.

Danso messed up but he was only doing what they have been trained to do, try to play the ball out rather than hoof it out. I really don’t like this modern approach by managers encouraging playing out of the box.

And just a quick shout out to Kinsky. His distribution at times wasn't great but overall it was another really solid performance.
No chance with either of the goals, but was calm and strong under pressure.

A great comeback after his potentially career ending 17 minutes in Madrid. <applause>

Don’t want to be to harsh on Danso. It’s a horrendous error however the other members of that back line have made their own share of errors to gift goals. Danso has actually been pretty consistent with solid but unspectacular performances and much more reliable than Romero and VDV.

It’s the magnitude of this error though that is the real killer such is the difference between going down and staying up and this was a rare chance to actually win a game which would go a long way to saving us.

We’re now hanging our hopes on palace not being to pissed after Thursday and then hoping that today doesn’t push what little confidence was remaining through the floor for the remaining games.

re Palace...those playing against west ham are playing for a European semi final place...so they could well put in a good shift
