Why so much sympathy for Legia?

They f**ed up monumentally by doing something really stupid, they played a banned player intentional or not you can't allow that, it creates a president that is open to abuse.

I read somewhere, and this could be balls, that Legia deliberately played him to test if UEFA would notice so he could play the next round. The reason they threw on a defender with 2 mins to go when winning 6-1 did seem strange to be fair. They hoped if caught UEFA would go easy on them.

Now as I say it's sheer speculation. But if true **** them even more
