I can't understand the exclusion of Micah Richards - I think he's the best right full back we have. Glen Johnson? He's good going forward but hapless running back towards his own goal.

I think Kelly has plenty of potential and that Woy is picking players on their ability and not where their club finished in the league - although again, that doesn't explain Richards being left out <doh>

This would make more sense to me (and would have got my support) if he had just written off this tournament in terms of expectations and brought in players with the potential to develop for future tournaments. I think he would have been forgiven for it even by those who didn't agree with it. But if he is wanting to recognise potential and build for the future why did he pick Terry and Lampard? I wouldn't even have Terry there on form, and definitely not on potential.

seriously ridiculous. Richards is amazing. Johnson was shocking against Belgium. So what does Roy do.....I'll take a player that Johnson keeps out the Liverpool team, rather than a title winner.....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Roy hodgson is a joke in my opinion! I am also of thee opinion that anyone that cant pronounce words in their own language should never represent their country.

I certainly understand why he's selected so many Liverpool players, he's had next to no time to prepare so he's gone for players he has worked with personally so they can hit the ground running in terms of understanding his philosophy.

He's been forced into this somewhat by the timing, just so long as after the tourney he looks at the options a bit more thoroughly. He's a very smart manager doing the best he can at short notice.

SSN is reporting that Steven Gerard's young kid has just been called up as cover for the 2012 England squad

Rumours flying (and it is just rumours) that Richards did a Carrick and refused to be a squad player, so it seems like Hodgsons hand has been forced really. No issue with Kelly over Simpson (he won't play anyway), just really disappointed in the players who've decided they're too good for a squad place.

Why would anyone be stupid enough to refuse any kind of call from England?

Simply cannot comprehend what goes through the minds of footballers sometimes - very little probably!

Not even that, he never worked with Downing, Henderson or Carroll who are very questionable call ups. OK I'm glad big Andy has been called up as I think he is a top player and can do well.

Micah Richards not being called up is a joke, he can't use the lack of first team football card for him or A Johnson when he then goes and selects Ox Chamberlain who has less experience and hardly a full time starter for Arsenal. <doh>

As a Liverpool fan, I do like Kelly and think he will become a great defender...hoping that he moves inside to replace Carra at CB one day. When he has played for us this season our goals conceded rate has been a lot better than it was without him, and although we finished mid table we did have the 3rd best defensive record in the league. Still, Micah should be starting for England.

I must admit I really like young Kelly. Not sure what all the big fuss is about.

The decision regarding Rio being unable to play two games a week still stands, and Richards refused to go on stand by list. Richards and Carrick are an absolute disgrace if its true they refused to be on stand by or in Carricks case only wanted to be considered if given an integral role. There is no place for these sorts of characters in an international squad. Who exactly do they think they are? Richards should focus his efforts on improving the concentration problems that saw him watch Zabeleta for the closing period of the season. I wouldn't consider him until he apologises for his stupidity. Rio's reaction though understandable is unprofessional and disrespectful to the camp.

Simpson is simply not an option at that level for me. Kelly is very good at centre back and full back, has been good for the 21's so it makes sense. We're unlikely to win so might aswell have one eye on 2014.

I don't understand such a reaction from those who claim to not give two ****s about England. Some don't seem to be able to decide whether they're interested or not. Unless it involves moaning and complaining some just don't wanna know. Hodgsons hands are tied by big time charlies like Richards, Rio and Carrick. We've been a bit unlucky with injuries and are now having to sort through who really wants to be there. Henderson was lucky to get the call but again its continuity from the 21's and there weren't many options bar going for untried types like Britton.

You talk a lot of sense there Pouch. I still think Newcastle players tend to get overlooked, but what you say about Richards and Carrick not wanting to be squad players I agree with wholeheartedly. What happened to it being an honour to play for your country?

The thing that pisses me off is that true England fans would probably give up a bollock to run out in that shirt. When they were kids growing up before being corrupted by the money, surely that was the ultimate dream? To have even a sniff by being on stand by is an honour. In a way its good to find out the character of the players with things like this. When you're knee deep in ****e in a big game, these are exactly the types to show they have hearts like a split pea. As I say we don't know that the case for certain but if it is they can take a running jump for me.
