Something like this is exactly the right thing to do. It wouldn't take that long to sort out if it was properly implemented with yellows and reds without exception. It will never happen though. The authorities care more about the product they sell than the long term good of the game. In the short term this would ruin the game as a spectacle as I think most footballers are so thick it wouldn't sink in straight away. It wouldn't just be games of 8 v 8 - it would be abandoned games when too many players have been sent off. It's what is needed though, along with the teams being deducted points if they cause an abandonment. The problem is, how would we feel 20 minutes into a game at St James' when the ref took the players off for an abandoned game?

They are in the main so far up their own arse, they'd just think the refs were wrong or do it in the belief refs wouldn't dare to punish them - do they not know who they are? It would wreak havoc and the fans are so stupid they'd turn on the refs. The PL would never allow it anyway (the FA would have no say in reality). Scudamore and co would just veto any such plan. Hence we have this pathetic respect campaign to say "hey look we are trying"

Don't think it would take much to sort out the respecting the ref thing. Tell any player other than the one being spoken to "You are not part of this conversation". If he continues, yellow card him. If he still continues, give him a second yellow.

As for the player you the ref is speaking to, make it a policy that addressing the referee as anything but "Sir" (or, where appropriate, "Ma'am") will be considered unsportsmanlike conduct. Once players get used to the idea that it is the referee who decides who gets to speak and when, the rest will follow.

The problem is that yellow cards are pretty ineffective. As I've said in the past, they are basically a free ticket to foul or abuse a player (or ref) and there is no immediate punishment or deterrent to not collect your freebie in that game. Sin bins are the only way forward. Having to play with 10 or 9 men on a regular basis will have clubs making sure their players are keeping their noses clean.

I do think it would take education on both sides though. When you compare refs in rugby to football, the refs in rugby seem far better at handling players and showing a bit of intelligence. I think that is one of the reasons the rugby players take it on the chin when mistakes are made. It is only some of them, but certain refs in football do seem to like being the centre of attention.

But to be fair the utter disdain Mike Riley shows for a player as he books him o's pure box office!

I am on the Hank side on this. That petulant dirty part of his game is who he is - no point crying over it when he gets sent off. He isnt going to change so live with it. I like him as a player - we need creativity in that midfield role and he brings that. Much rather watch a player who is prepared to try the difficult ball than just play a short pass every time.

But I really don't think we should just accept a guy who seems hell bent on giving himself 3-5 games off a season due to indiscipline.
That **** rides when you're Roy Keane. Not when you're a player whose both distinctly average, and doesn't tackle anyway.

The difference is that Keane knew he could get away with that by making sure he was good enough to get back into the team once his suspension was over. It's the club's job to make sure we have options that mean he doesn't get to do that without making sure he plays damn well when he is in the team. I think he is about to find out in the next three games that the club does have that option and that getting back into the team might not be as easy as he imagines.

As mentioned we wait on the emergence of Merino to knock him down a peg. Sad thing is I'm certain we won't be seeing this crap if he feels his position is under threat.
The fact he's the highest earner at this club makes actions like this an absolute two fingers to the fans. 0-0 and we were playing well, looked like we might nick sumat, and he falls for the oldest trick in the book by onea the biggest ****ers in the league.

No to the sin bin for me, just goes against tradition too much. Such a large change that would cause a complete revision of tactics- I think it would ruin the game.

Constant arguments in football mate, we'd need video replays on the frigging sin bins, imagine the time it would all take.

Just on my way back to Jakarta from KL watching our niece play Water Polo for Indonesia in the SEA Games. Not really watched it much before but they have quite an interesting disciplinary activity for foul play.

Normal foul given for routine stuff like trying to drown your opponent, exclusion for 30secs or 1 opposition attack for more serious stuff like strangling. Player has to go and tread water in a little red pen in corner of pool and then red card and banned from game for fighting etc, but replaced by substitute.

Unfortunately she managed to pick up the latter. I was quite impressed with how two girls could go at it the length of the pool while still staying afloat! She ended up in hospital as she had taken a blow to the windpipe but Thai girl came off worst!

Anyway struck me that you could introduce both the exclusion for a limited period and a player sent off but replaced by a sub for some offences. Think it is wrong that a player can get the same punishment for two premeditated deliberate attempts to stop play (holding, deliberate fouls) as two mistimed challenges. Also would introduce short term sin bin for time wasting. Booking does nothing except hold play up further
