I've dug up some stats for my argument regarding the North East.

At SJP:

5th Sept 2001 - England 2 - 0 Albania - 2002 WC Qual - 51,046
18th August 2004 - England 3 - 0 Ukraine - Friendly - 35,387
30th March 2005 - England 2 - 0 Azerbaijan - 2006 WC Qual - 49,046

At SoL:

10th October 1999 - England 2 - 1 Belgium - Friendly - 40,897
2nd April 2003 - England 2 - 0 Turkey - Euro 2004 Qual - 47.667

At Riverside:

11th June 2003 - England 2 - 1 Slovakia - Euro 2004 Qual - 35,000 (Boro's record attendance)

So the only one that didn't sell well (compared to ground capacity) was the one that was a evening friendly.

Was this a while back? I remember I got so annoyed at him because he just wouldn't accept that there could be friendlies in other grounds, he didn't recognise that some people don't have the time and/or money to travel to London just to see their national team..

He said it tonight. He's trying to tell people the reason the attendance tonight is low is because of John Terry, yet in 1998 when England played similar level of opposition in Czech Republic the attendance was just over 38,000, also in November.

Still pretty good attendances considering they were friendlies. SJP was 7000 under capacity while the SoL was 9000 under. Considering they think only 50,000 people will turn up at Wembley tonight, which makes that about 40,000 under, it makes the North East look fairly passionate.

It would be interesting to see what effect the 2008 Euro shambles and 2010 WC have had on the support though.

SJP was about 17000 under capacity, the game at Sunderland was a Sunday afternoon, myself personally I went to all of those games.

<doh> Him and Darren Gough were arguing about it a few months back too, I don't know why he's so stubborn about it
