I'm sorry (and I hate to sound all Yer Da) but if you're being paid £80k a week to be a footballer then putting in effort in is the bare minimum.

No one praises me at work for just turning up every day and picking up my salary on pay day. And you're right, I don't fault him for signing a silly contract.

Anyway, we're not going to agree so I'll stop there. :)

Thanks Shane for being here, still holds the record for the fastest Premier League goal, he still will live in our memory for that Liverpool goal. Just hope he finds a decent Club to see out his career.

Seemed like a great professional; always put in effort and never kicked up a fuss as far as I'm aware. Never usually the best but never usually the worst either. What an engine though!

Most definitely the right decision, however, for the sake of nostalgia I wouldn't have minded him staying one more season!

Top servant for the club, made some great memories and should be respected.

    Cue the Titanic music...

    He already did.:emoticon-0136-giggl

Shane certainly had his moments but I can't get too nostalgic over a pretty average player TBH. The term "great servant" is used at times like these but let's be honest he's done very well for himself at Saints, the last eight years in the Premiership is not bad going for someone of his ability. Normally giving your all for the team would be the least he would be expected to do, but after the lack of effort from the rest after March he stood out like a beacon.
I know the above reads like I dislike the guy but I don't. I wish him well but he's not in the legend class for me.

Great goal this one, was watching in a bar in poland, only one interested in the football, went nuts when it went in and got some very odd looks, ended up singing a lot of karaoke that night...

For me, it’s an important signal we’re moving in the right direction. Shane has done really well for himself here. Don’t know his goal record & honestly nor do I want to know because I know it’s fairly meagre for a forward. That said, always gave 100% & never caused any issues. Thanks Shane, good luck & bye.

I don't believe he has finished with football yet, there are going to be some defenders that are going to hate faceing him, there is life in the old dog yet.

Obviously nowhere near as talented as others who have worn the famous number 7 shirt,
But in a era filled with prima donnas, it’s all too easy to take for granted the virtues of being a good honest professional role model. If it’s that easy, why aren’t there more like it? Plus he has produced some iconic moments in his career at saints and a player I will look back on fondly

I remember taking my lad to a game against West Brom on 2014. We lost 3-0 and were destroyed by Lukaku and Long. He was always good against us...

He was also superb in ,2016 alongside Pelle, Mane and Tadic. Strange isn't it how players play better with good players along side them. I know at times his finishing was a bit ropey, but I do think he is slightly under-rated by a few on this thread.

When my lad was 6, he chose Long as the name on his first shirt, there must have been a reason. Thank you Shane!

But he was working hard. You know more than most that most of the work isnt done at 3pm on a Saturday. He was always fit, keen, ready to run through brick walls for us and the best version of himself he could be and there’s plenty that aren’t that. He could still outjump anyone at 30+ and outrun a few

I’m pleased the club now have the wherewithal to replace him with someone better, but I’ll always love him

I may love the next guy more if he comes with the same attitude AND scores more goals

Every manager and his fellow pro's appreciated him and that tells you that he was a real team player like Steven Davis before him and his fellow strikers profited from his selfless work, ask Danny Ings.
Some fans judge players by stats and in that respect, as a forward he maybe should've scored more but the majority of fans recognise what he has given to the club and he will be remembered fondly here by most.
    All the best Shane.

Yup, the reason everyone is a bit down on him is that we haven’t had a decent striker for him to play alongside for a while. If we had Pele or Ings banging them in we would be grateful for his contribution.
Even so it’s probably time he moved on.

If we had defenders who were nice and worked hard but didn't stop attackers scoring or midfielders who ran around a lot but gave the ball away easily I wonder if we would find as many fans happy to overlook their severe lack of ability. Shane obviously did something right to be so well liked by a big chunk of the fanbase.

All the best for the future Shane, I look forwards to seeing his replacement soon.
