He hasn't been holding the club back. The club has been holding the club back. I don't blame Shane for signing that contract for one second. He was offered it - he signed it. And to say he's non-league standard is odd to say the least.

Yeah the club has held itself back by putting long, Forster, Theo etc etc on massive long contracts. I don’t blame the players but I don’t want to pay my money to a club making such ludicrous decisions so I watch on tv now instead

Long is around league 2 standard but my point remains

I agree but you can't blame the players for taking what's being put in front of them.

No agreed, I have edited my post.

I don’t blame the players at all. But it also means I can’t justify the ticket prices etc when I see the club wasting money like that. Just my personal view and reason why I don’t have a season ticket anymore.
(Probs being harsh but I can’t help that i see long as the absolute symbol of our downfall)

Wish him all the best, he had such strong physical attributes; pace, acceleration and the ability to jump for headers, he had guile to pressure and pull around defenders, but was so short on composure when it came to scoring. In recent seasons he has developed a reputation for diving, which has been pretty pathetic and embarrassing on occasion.

He is four years past his sell-by date and Saints did us, and him, no favours for keeping him around so long (pun not intended).

In fairness Long also had a good season in 19/20 and certainly brought the best out of Ings while he was here - no way he hits 20 without Shane's contribution that season.

Unfortunately that was his Indian Summer and the two year deal he was offered on the back of it was clearly a mistake.

Shane Long appreciation thread.

I can't remember which game it was, possibly Arsenal at home? Where he came on, and got the biggest cheer of the game for sprinting 40 yards to close down the Arsenal RB and get a block in to knock the ball out for a throw and slow down the relentless Arsenal attacks. That sums up Shane Long. He could be completely out of favour, not play for us for a season, then come on as a late substitute and bust a gut to try and help the team. We all know about his limitations, but during a time when very few of our players seem to give a ****, even the ones that are presumably still going to be here this season, Shane Long gave a ****. As fans we want to see skill, we want to see goals, but we also want to see that the players being paid handsomly by our club are putting in a shift for the team and fans and he always has.
Thank you for that, and thank you for those sprinklings of magic over the years too.

Naaaaaaaaaaaa, naaaaa, naa, na, na, na, naaaaa....na, na, na, naaaaa...Shaaaaaaaane Long <cheers>

^^^^^ This x 1000000+

Actually gave a **** and I don't think his limitations were as bad as we make out.

Good post. He cared, he wore the shirt and showed many of the younger guys what commitment really means. Best wishes Shane and many thanks for your efforts, and perhaps above all else, your amazingly positive attitude.

So, has it actually been confirmed he is leaving? There was talk this week that we were considering offering another year, which I wouldn’t be surprised at.

We’d have to dig this thread up in 12 months time.

Seriously? We’re that pessimistic about signing strikers?

Something i heard on SWF, not that it was majored on, just that there had been some discussions.

It doesn’t mean we aren’t going to buy others, i wonder if we are moving AA on (part of the issue is not settling down here), and keep Shane for his place, whilst buying another 1st choice.
