Absolute class of a player. Never seemed to miss. Goals for England against appearances incredible. Great character. Rest in Peace Jimmy.

Was too young to see him play in person so have only seen the clips but even watching them you can see the man was pure class. Like many on here I remember the days of Saint and Greavsie .. used to love the way they used to bounce of each other but his depth of knowledge was there for all to see and what a great sense of humour the bloke had. Commiserations to all his family, the world has lost another legend. RIP Jimmy.

RIP Jimmy Greaves, a football legend. Am I correct in saying Geoff Hurst wouldn't have been on the pitch in the 66 World final if Jimmy had been fit? I'm not sure.

For those who haven't seen many of his goals.
Watch for the one against manure, classic.

Look at the state of those pitches. Amazing how nowadays a pitch would have been considered a bowling green in those days is blamed for a poor performance.

Pretty much.

Greaves had an injury just before the competition and never got back in as Ramsey basically wasn't going to change a winning team.

Without ever blaming his alcoholism on not been in the team of 66, Jimmy did write that the disappointment of it was a factor in his addiction.

Hard to say Kemps. Jimmy played innthe group matches but got a bad injury requiring 14 stitches. Sir Alf brought in Hurst and it worked so kept him in. Sir Ali was one for picking players to fit the plan he had. Would a Fulham, Huddersfield or Blackpool player be inna World Cup team now? Most of us at the time would have picked Greaves as we obviously new better than Sir Alf.<laugh>

He is still the youngest player to reach 100 goals, still Chelsea's most league goals in a season record holder, as he is also at Spurs. First player to score the most goals in the top flight 3 seasons running. The season he joined Spurs from Milan he didn't join until December but still scored 30 goals!

He wasn't injured before the competition. He played in all 3 group games. A terrible challenge in the last group game against France saw him needing 14 stitches. Geoff Hurst came in, Sir Alf decided not to change a winning team and the rest, as they say, is history.
