When we get the inevitable "Song for Sam" thread, you'd like to think his Scotland-England switch would provide a chance for some originality.

But it won't.

We had a good, super original one at the Norwich game. "Dadada dadadadadada, Sam Gallagher, Gallagher, Sam Gallagher!" to the tune of that KC & The Sunshine Band song.

I'd send him out on loan to the Championship next season so he gets a run of games and bring in a 20 a season striker in his place. He's good for his age, but up front is our weakest area and so should be invested heavily in in the Summer. Wouldn't want to have just him and Rickie (and Jay when needed) as our only strikers when pushing on for top 6 and when we've not scored more than 1 in many games this season.

We don't do loans if you remember. Our policy is that training regularly with premier league and international players is better than playing at a lower level.

As Lff said, Les Read said we don't do loans as we prefer players to develop within our team. This is borne out by observation over the last few years...only players on their way out go out on loan. Les then quickly added that it might happen sometimes...obviously just remembering that 2 players were about to go out on loan...including Isgrove who I think may be gone in the summer. I doubt a player like Sam who is actually an occasional first teamer will be sent out as his development in definitely within the group.

It depends though - is Sam only getting chances in the first team because of Rickie's struggles? Assuming our main signing in the Summer is a striker (it has to be, really) that might restrict Gallagher's first team chances more, because Lambert would probably take over the impact sub role.

Well it's not often we're in a position like this, where we have a young talent, who won't get a lot of games, who is probably good enough to score double figures in the Championship. In the past when we've had players of that quality, they've been in the team.

The question is whether he'd develop faster with our top facilities and coaching, or with a Championship team playing every week. I think it might be the latter.

Players get injured and go off form etc. Gallagher looks as if he has all the tools to be a good striker (too early to say how good) and has shown he has the fearlessness that seems to be endemic in our Academy lads. His place is here training to our style....we could save ourselves a fortune if he can live up to his promise. Another striker coming in will just give him more opportunity to learn and even more incentive to push on.

Agreed, and let's not forget that the aims of the club include pushing for European places and winning cups. The more competitions we are involved in, the less dead wood our squad must contain, and we have a huge advantage over other teams in that our first team squad can be larger than most because of all our Academy graduates. Players like Sam, Reed, Sinclair, Rowe, Targett etc. will come into their own in the next couple of years, regardless of the quality of transfer purchases we make.

And this year's Mercury Award goes to the Northam Stand in Southampton.

Maybe this suggests that he is on his way out?

It states that he signed a long term contract in the summer keeping him here until 2017, so who knows?.

I genuinely think that he is one of the ones where a loan is seen as beneficial. I haven't seen too much of him, but the Swindon fans were bigging him up massively after his debut for them.
