ier League » Southampton Fonte sees Swede star in Saints ace Southampton, Last updated: 17 minutes ago Jose Fonte claims Southampton starlet Sam Gallagher is "a handful" and has the potential to be as good as Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The 18-year-old forward has gradually forced his way into Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino's plans this season having made his debut as a substitute in the Capital One Cup clash against Sunderland in November and scored his first goal against Yeovil in the FA Cup in January. Gallagher made his first senior start on January 28 in a Premier League match against Arsenal, before scoring his first league goal in Saturday's 4-2 win against Norwich at St Mary's. And Fonte has been impressed with Gallagher's progress while he feels that he can go on and not only become a regular first-team start for the Saints but also be as good as Sweden's international superstar Ibrahimovic. "You can see he's very strong, very tall and very powerful and he has teammates like Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert to teach him so he can only get better," said Fonte in the Daily Echo. "He's a little bit like Ibrahimovic. He still has to work a lot to be like him but he has pace, he has power, he's tall so he can be a threat in the air and in behind with his pace. He's a handful! "He has good attributes for a striker, definitely. If he keeps working very hard he can get to that level and be the full package."

High praise indeed!

If Jose had actually played against Ibrahimovic it would be a more meaningful thing to say about Sam. As it is, it's a great compliment, but at this stage, not much else. Would be nice though!

His finishing looks very assured, but that's about all I can say about him having not seen much of him yet. I'd say his finishing at present is already better than Jay's.

I think Fonte was saying he is a player in Ibrahimovic's style...not that he was as good as him. Sam is a big strong lad...he looks like a centre forward...luckily he is in a team that will give time and patience to develop fully. Very promising is all I would say.

I'd send him out on loan to the Championship next season so he gets a run of games and bring in a 20 a season striker in his place. He's good for his age, but up front is our weakest area and so should be invested heavily in in the Summer. Wouldn't want to have just him and Rickie (and Jay when needed) as our only strikers when pushing on for top 6 and when we've not scored more than 1 in many games this season.

That won't happen. Only those not in the plans go on loan.

When we get the inevitable "Song for Sam" thread, you'd like to think his Scotland-England switch would provide a chance for some originality.

But it won't.
