Inter decided they wanted Paulinho and need the money from Coutinho sale, so they were somewhat pushing Coutinho out the door. Had Liverpool not upped their bid, Coutinho would be choosing between an Inter team that doesn't want him and Saints who want him a lot and where he will play. In that situation, I think he might have signed.

As it is, I agree with beef_dripping. We would have to bid a lot more than Liverpool for Coutinho for Inter to even mess with a deal that Coutinho might refuse. Probably at least 15 million Euros. Seems too steep to me.

If this is true and we did bid for him I would pull out now. Over €13m is crazy money and. Have my doubts he is worth that much atm.

If we didn't respond to their request to up the bid it sounds like we moved on a few days ago. Hopefully we are already working on another target.

The worrying thing is I haven't seen any other links to another tricky winger type. How about that De Ridder bloke, i've seen an awesome vid of him on youtube............ohh.

If they have met the 13m, it's time to cut bait. Was worth making a run at him, but as it doesn't appear that Liverpool is blinking, we now need to look at other targets.

Or Cortese knew that he would be bidding against himself unless Liverpool improved upon their offer.

Some bloke on Saintsweb has just complained that 13million euros was way too much for Coutinho, and that you could get James Rodriguez for about that. You wouldn't be able to buy a lock of James Rodriguez's hair for that money. I think some people have lost the plot on prices during our wilderness years.

Besides which...only room for one JRod!

Jay Rod needs to go asap. One of the worst players to play in premier league this season.

For real? I don't think he's even one of the worst players who have played for Southampton in the Premier League and there are five teams worse than us.

Pretty sure you could go to the Villa board and they would be happy to nominate 10 players worse than Rodriguez.

Saints could turn their attentions to Robert Firmino as Inter Milan try to rush through a deal with Liverpool for Philippe Coutinho.
Reports in Italy say that Inter are keen to get a quick deal done for Coutinho and are pushing for it to happen by the end of the weekend.
However, with the deal looking less likely to happen for Saints they are now eyeing a possible £8.5m swoop for Hoffenheim’s Brazilian midfielder Firmino.
The 21-year-old signed for Hoffenheim in December 2010 after a spell at Brazilian side Figueirense and has gone on to make 63 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring 13 goals.

I watched Moneyball last night so it now seems obvious to me that we need to recruit a fat statto to join our transfer committee.

Those lot comparing SDR to Phillippe Coutinho, oh wow.

Coutinho is highly regarded on the continent, whereas we all didn't have a clue who Steve was!

The Firmino rumour was made up by a fan on SaintsWeb and then a few others helped it to snowball.

It has now been in the Echo and tweeted by the Reuters Global Sport Editor.

The BBC (although via The Mail) are reporting that Liverpool didn't increase their overall bid for Coutinho they're just offering more money up front. Assuming we haven't moved on to other targets, this could still happen.

It is always going to be an uphill battle bringing in top foreign players if one of the "big names" comes in for them - the majority will not have heard of Saints.
This will be a big challenge for NC and his strategy for putting us on the map if he wants to do it by using top foreign players rather than Brits

It really wouldn't surprise me if we didn't sign anyone else this window. The team is performing well at the moment and we are in a good position to stay up. The key position before the window opened was CB and we've signed Forren so that may be our only business in Jan. Also with the changing of the managers the hierarchy may feel that bringing in another player or two may disrupt things even further and send us on a bad run.

That being said if the right player comes along at the right price then I think we would go in for him, just don't think we will be desperate to bring players in.
