What A Statement Saints!
With Southampton FC stating that no employee at the club will be furloughed and they will continue to pay 100% of all salaries, they have gone and placed themselves at the front of the 'Good Guys' podium. No going cap in hand to the government like other organisations. Just doing the right thing by everyone.
With the board, senior coaching staff and the entire first-team squad agreeing to take a voluntary wage deferral for three months it is a very clear demonstration of a club united, and a club that is empathetic to the crisis affecting the whole world. This is more than about money. This is about wealthy people recognising they have a social responsibility to fellow, far less wealthy, workers and the club supporters. It is also a very clear message to everyone that at Southampton, we really are all in this together.
There have been times when I have felt disillusioned with football, especially with the Premier League, and although I still find all the money sloshing around sport revolting, I must say I am more than just proud of our club, and everyone associated with it for making this decision. Hopefully this will get the news coverage it deserves and other teams will follow suit. I'm incredibly proud that our club has a big heart.
Thank you very much to everyone involved at Southampton FC.
