When I am in France, I have a job (I know, that's a shock to some of you) in which I act as a "facilitator" for French people learning English. Basically, I go out to lunch with up to 6 French people - usually youngish and in business - and speak English while being fed grotesquely expensive food. And I get paid for it. It's hell, but someone has to do it.
Anyway, point is that occasionally I get lucky and there will be a group who speak English sufficiently well to be genuinely interesting. There are times when it's excruciatingly painful and I have to work hard for my lunch. In between, there are lots of dullish conversations. As we leave the restaurant, we usually have a break and speak French for a few minutes. Many of those who have been pretty damned boring in English suddenly become animated when they are speaking French. Surprise!
I have seen comments about Claude being amusing, witty and generally good fun. I'll take their word for it, rather than the painful experience of seeing him try to express himself in English. At least, unlike Poch, he gives it a go.
So mange tout, Claude. English is canard.
