Gazza looked like he played well ... maybe he's benefitting from playing regular U21 football?

Loved the whole team knee slide....but shouldn't do it again and risk injury. Glad Gazza had a good game...might need him sometime (suppresses shudder). Notice the Liverpool music at the beginning, but I believe the players had all been fitted with earplugs so they couldn't hear the Siren call. :)

Poor old Gazza. If he'd played the Tottenham game the way FF did, he's have been pilloried. He'll be on a hiding to nothing every time he plays for us in future as no-one will forgive him a bad game, ever.

I agree. I think Saints supporters have been quite hard on Gazzaniga. I hardly ever see a comment emphasising the positives in his ability, and there are plenty. In the past he has been pitched into the full glare of the first team before he has been ready. There's blooding youngsters and then there is turning to a young, inexperienced goalkeeper, when there is no backup. I believe Gazza will be an excellent goalkeeper in the future. But he is not one of the brigade who is the full model at 20. He's only 22 now.

I hope you are right...GKs take longer to peak than outfield players. However, I get very twitchy about keepers (so I will pretend I didn't read that criticism of Forster :)).

So do central defenders for some reason

Hopefully we are patient and continue to utilise lower league loans - play them in the juniors for as long as they can. Then loan to lower leagues. Turnbull and Stephens could benefit immensely from playing together in League 1 this season

There is a worrying trend among football fans that if a player hasn't made it by 19-20 then they don't have a chance. Rickie proved otherwise and there are numerous other examples. Big example is the people writing off Targett as he has not got to the position of Shaw by the same age

Incidentally, I watched Saints media interview with JWP, and up came a few good group photos of younger days. Even though they are from only a few years ago, one or two players are that changed that they are not dead simple to identify.

Here's the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0J8hMoi2xs

And here's an early photo example. Clearly, from this picture, you can see that JWP is a leader:

Because they are vastly overshadowed by the negatives. I won't sugarcoat things. He's one of the most incompetent goalkeepers I've seen in the game, and I watch a lot of football.

They are NOT vastly overshadowed. Mistakes by a goalkeeper are glaring, because he is the last player. After him there is just the goal. If he does what he is trained to do then that is taken as the norm. There are few positives, unless he leaps across the goal to deny someone a top corner strike. Gazza does have plenty of positives. You're just not seeing them.

Well he's a professional footballer, you don't get to that stage by doing everything wrong. So of course he does some things right, by in my opinion not enough of them and not enough for club of our level.
