Are you saying we haven't spent good money since we've been back in he Premier League?

I'll also add that Newcastle took the gamble. They didn't kick in very well did they?
But we are spending money. We spent 12m on Hojbjerg, 10m on Redmond, and potentially 20m on Boufal (along possibly with 9m on Stanciu).
I'm not sure what that is if it's not spending money. You seem to be falling into the narrative rather than the reality.
If we suddenly started spunking 20/30/40m on players that turn out to be average, the board would be (rightly) castigated for it. Can't win.
