No coach would ask his CB pair to split in any circumstances when their team doesn't have the ball.

CDM can drop in the hole when you have possession but without it that is suicide. I think it was just lack of an organisational presence. A player like Virgil is not only good because of his ability to defend but also because he improves other players. Neither Maya or Jack are the type to take control and make the defence more compact etc.

He can't be fit after such a long lay off. If he signs, he will be in for some intensive training between now and the 26th....with no guarantee he will be anything other than on the bench. He is very experienced which will help him, but he still has to have some understanding of the team.....be wary of passing back to Forster, Tadic will never score....that sort of thing.

I think he will be back up for while. I really can't see him playing in the final unless we get yet another injury. If he proves his fitness put him on the bench.

The reported wage demands are quite high, I don't think we would have went along with the deal just to have him on the bench as cover. It will take time to get him up to fitness, sure, but I imagine the view is to play Yoshida and Caceres until VD is back.

We won't be paying him £100k a week.
