Football Italia on Twitter are reporting that we are close to agreeing a deal for Kalidou koulibaly.

I'm not sure how reliable this is, but we all need cheering up after the Everton game!

I'd be delighted if we sign Koulibaly. Seems very, very highly rated.

I'd also be very interested to see what it means if we sign Koulibaly AND VVD as kinda seems possible.

Maybe the rumours of Fonte returning to Portugal at the end of the season are true, and we are thinking long term?

VVD can play DM as well as CB which after Saturday would be very welcome

Well, under normal circumstances, we'd have had Clasie available and Romeu wouldn't have been making his debut so I don't really see DM as a panic position; we have more cover for it than we had for much of last year when it was really just the Morgan and Victor show.

I cant really see us going for Kalidou and VVD. If we sign either one of them we'd already have 4 CB's plus Cuco and the Academy lads in a pinch. I can only imagine we'd be happy with either and will sign whoever comes first or at a better price.

Its also possible that either Jose or Maya are trying to leave in which case wed replace them, but Ron has shot down any rumors regarding our beloved leader and there's been no word whatsoever on Maya eyeing the exit so it seems unlikely.

Either one would be good I have two thoughts here:

Either this is a shot across Celtic's bows, or Virgil actually is lined up elsewhere. United, for example.

no idea who this guy is, if we could only have 1 out of the 2 who would people perfer. I have obviously seen a bit of VVD but i reckon my 3 year old daughter could play centre back for celtic and put in a decent shift.

A possible bonus of buying Koulibaly is it can help keep the cost of VVD down. If we're desperate for a CB, Celtic can name their price.
Also, if we have three high quality CBs, that would reflect Ron taking Europe and the league seriously. Can rotate completely then, and always have fresh pairings at the back, without sacrificing quality. If VVD and Koulibaly can both play DM on occasions, then the central column of that back six becomes highly fluid. Almost Dutch in its execution. :emoticon-0103-cool:

Or Ron's moving to a three CB system! Or Ron wants some serious competition for our key positions. Or Ron wants to stop pissing around getting bad results while we wait for Celtic to flop out of Europe. Either way, this board needs a Ron emoticon - an emotiRon even. I think of the one with shades as Ron, but a pair of white chinos or other Regatta wear would be nice to switch it around a bit.

Would we be upset if we signed both? After all they're both (meant to be) quality...

...but of course it would push Maya back and probably spell the beginning of the end for Jose...

So...sentiment or potential quality? The choice Saints fans....is yours....

The rumours of Koulibaly didn't start until Celtic started delaying, saying they want to qualify (or not) for champions league before selling. And who's to say VVD wouldn't just decide he'd rather stay put and play in champions league. I think Koulibaly is an alternative.

I don't see why would it be more tempting to play in the CL with a club like Celtic (presumably they would crash out in the group stage) than in the EPL. In the CL, player can hope for, let's say, 4 matches against top teams (that's optimistic, but let's say) and 2 matches against some not so great eastern european or such team. In the EPL, he has about 12 matches against really strong opposition (United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, all times two).

Celtic have been clear on their stance with us since the beginning. We understand the deal and have from near enough day one.

The two clubs have a good relationship and I fully expect to see VVD at St. Mary's following the conclusion of Celtic's two games with Malmo.

Koulibaly? I've heard absolutely nothing about him.

Yeah Maya would be gone. But if it improves our defence who cares?

VVD, Fonte,Koulibaly, Caulker, McCarthy. Would be our strongest cb in ages.
