Maya has been through the full range of "not good enough for League 1" to "legend", bless him. Seems a very bright bloke, and I'm sure he'll make a decision that suits him and his family. I would be surprised if the club didn't try to keep him. He's shown loyalty and always put in a shift when called upon, notably the back end of the season. I would not be surprised to see him so say "No thanks, I'm off home".
I would give him a contract extension in a breath He has been a model professional and really stepped up to the plate last season
Maya may be that principled player we've been looking for. Even if he wants to go he will do it the honourable way. (Now watch him get caught texting Klipp Klopp, posting moody pictures on Twitter and me shouting they're all dickheads. )
Absolutely, extension for him. Although if we sign this bloke we have Stephens, yoshi and Jan all battling for 3rd place. As much as yoshi has grown I still feel fonte (of old) would be ahead of him. Seems bit of a step back to have him as 1st choice next to VVD
As was mentioned the last time we discussed Maya, the fact he hasn't signed an extension already could be pretty significant. He has a year left, and usually when you get to a year left it's either sell or sign a new one. So: 1. He is playing it very cool and will sign a new deal 2. He will be sold this summer 3. He will run his contract all the way down and leave on a free
If he doesn't want to sign a new deal then I think we will just keep him and let him leave on a free next summer, we would get hardly any money for him with only a year left so may aswell keep him.
I think Yoshida is one of my favourite players to have walked through our doors in the last 5 years or more. Even when he barely figured for us, even when he threw in a few indifferent performances, there was something endearing about the guy. I think all teams could do with more Mayas and in today’s age professionals such as he are a rare breed. Always grinning from ear to ear (apart from that heart-breaking post match interview after theBe'er Sheva home tie), seems to really love the game and has improved into what I would rate as a very capable defender for the level we are at. Struggling to think of a player more deserving of a new deal in recent times! I also had the pleasure of meeting him after the 8-0 game.
I was hoping that we would sign Maguire from Hull, but it seems like Leicester are buying or interested in a lot of good players. Players that I wish we were buying
McGuire would have been my first choice for this summer but Leicester grabbed him for a very reasonable fee that we certainly could afford but are paying him a reported £100k pw which we won't pay so was never going to happen
As it happens, two croatian central defenders which are plying their trade in Poland have been voted in the top three CB's in the league (Jan was voted the best), so that made it to the news here. One paper interviewed Nenad Bjelica, who is a croatian manager and actually Jan's current manager in Lech. The reason why I'm mentioning this is because he said that that Jan is a class above anyone else in the league in his position, so there you have it. And he also said that Jan is going to Southampton so I think it's safe to say that the deal is done.
