It may apply in another situation but bids were accepted from both clubs so the choice here was clearly a personal preference by the player himself and as he came from the midlands and still has family there...

Disappointed that we haven't got him, but he has made his choice. Am pleased we are looking at players like him and have offered the right price (presumably). Next!

Another reason he may have chosen Leicester is because Puel showed, when here, that he would use young players.

That's the sad reality, the likes of Leicester and Everton are just that bit more ambitious than we are these days, I can't see us knocking on the door of the CL again for the forseeable future, but tbh after last season I will take mid-table obscurity.

    Welcome to football in 2018.

At some point, we might get with the times too. Maybe.

Indeed. We signed Jay Rodriguez for £7m in 2012...from 2012-13 (or first season back) to 2016-17, our turnover increased by a little more than 2.5x, so a Jay Rodriguez would cost you £18m or more today. Maddison is a better prospect than Jay was, so the fee isn't excessive.

It isn't "football gone mad"; Maddison at £20m+ is entirely rational given the financial framework of today, because the value of the TV rights have exploded.

Yep. Paying an inflated price is no guarantee of getting the quality that a club has been looking for e.g Man U., Chelsea They have often paid mega money for players who have not then kept a 1st team spot.

Mmm, is that the fee paid issue............. or the Jose effect?

I'm saying that these are not inflated prices. These are entirely rational prices given club revenues today. And no, there are no guarantees that spending more will bring better players, but it's more likely that you'll get better players if you're willing to pay market price. There is a reason we once had some exceedingly good players, and there's a reason we do not have any now. We used to pay some large transfer fees given our station, and now we do not.

Every team has. When your revenues increase by 250% in five years, you're naturally going to break your transfer record on a near-yearly basis.

That said, the increases in our record fees haven't come close to matching the increase in our revenues. If they had kept up, our record fee would be around £30m.
