So the guy scored 28 goals in 118 league apps for Estudiantes and scored 18 in 65 for Monaco, now at the young age of 26. That's apparently worth 22 million pounds. It baffles the mind.
He's averaged a goal per 90 minutes over his last 2 seasons, but he's usually used as a sub. Similar to how earlier in the season Prowse had good stats per minute but bad per game stats because of how rarely he played the full 90. But now he's playing the full 90 he's winning MotM awards. I'll reserve my judgement on how he plays until i actually see him play.

Pelle was a top scorer for two seasons in a row though and cost half as much. This guy sits on the bench most of the time.
Nothing against Guido here as I don't know anything about him, but how can he be worth that amount i cannot fathom. Even in this market, crazy as it is, it seems that we're massivley overpaying for him. I mean, there's a croatian guy playing at Caen, 6'3, robust target man, scored 20 in 48 for a pretty poor team, we could get him for like 5 mil probably. To pay such an amount for Guido means that we identified there something that sets him apart from your run of the mill target man and I hope that's true, otherwise we're going to throw a lot of money down the drain

The French league is a much better league though. Pelle was also playing in one of the poorest league's in Europe, and he was written off almost immediately. Since 2015 Carrillo has averaged a goal every 95 minutes or so, mainly from the bench.

Just don't really know what kind of ST people were expecting for £19 million is all.

Definitely, there are no sure things at that price. I'd have preferred targeting a player in a league where we had more financial leverage however, and I'm frankly not big on strikers who are mostly good in the air...quite a lot of them have arrived in the PL in recent years to discover that they cannot bully defenders at this level, and don't offer enough otherwise to merit a consistent place.

In the league, he's averaging a goal every 173 minutes since joining Monaco. Include CL and it's a goal every 199 minutes in top-level competition. In all comps, his goal rate is gaudy mostly because he gets starts in cup matches against opposition that really doesn't merit mention; French fourth division clubs are a step below even Conference National.

Most of that is from a terrible first season though. this season and last season its been far better for him, outside of his sub appearances in the UCL anyway.

I have never understood why fans worry about the fees paid for players, or the wages paid to them for that matter. It’s not our money after all, or only indirectly anyway.

FifaProManagerEvolution2018 makes everyone an expert

I like to think the club have the resources to know what they're doing although nothing's certain of course
Given we paid loose change for VVD and he's now the most expensive defender in the world that wasn't a bad decision

Price is not a concern to me-inflation in players value has been so high that you only have to look at the prices 2-3 seasons ago to see that overpaying a bit becomes irrelevant. Just before we spend too much time doubting whether he’s the best we could expect, can we just get this over the line first, please.

Because he's mostly scoring in matches that are already long past decided. Here are the situations where his league goals have come from over the past two years, with the score:

Against Metz: 72nd minute (5-0); 83rd minute (6-0).
Against Nancy: 87th minute (4-0); 90th minute (6-0).
Against Marseille: 90th minute (4-0).
Against Dijon: 17th minute (1-0).
Against SC Bastia: 79th minute (5-0).
Against Guingamp: 10th minute (1-0); 78th minute (6-0).
Against Troyes: 85th minute (2-2); 88th minute (3-2).

I take your point but rather like his ability to score in the last 15mins of a game :)

Problem being that only two of those late goals (both against Troyes) were much more than stat-padding at that point. Again, that's partially because Monaco runs up the score a lot, but it makes it really difficult to evaluate his scoring nous when so much of his production has been in the dying moments of games against long-since defeated opposition.

So what we're saying is he's either their Jonno Forte or their Sadio Mane?

Can score at the end of a match....we could do with one of them. :)

Saints need to sign a player
Saints fans want us to spend money
Saints fans want a striker
Saints are signing a player.
Some Saints fans immediately think it’s too much money
Some Saints fans are not happy or at least they are pointing out the negatives straight away.

Shock
