Leaving aside the “crazy money” comment (does money come any other way?) this makes him sound like a classic Saints signing: signed to a big club, didn’t get the chances and now keen to catch up lost time.

You know, I was a bit doubtful about the pink tinge to the lenses at first, but I think these new glasses are working out well!

Even the top sides buy players that do not deliver and get sold or loaned out a few years later. No buy is without risk. Seems simple to me.....we need a striker, he's a striker....and the club have decided he can do a job for us. As for the price....fans should make their mind up...one day they say we are paying too much and another day they moan we need to pay up and get someone in. Prices are going up and, although we offer a chance to play in the EPL, we aren't a top side with a history of cups and championships to offer a prospect.

They didn't rate him before this, either. Went and checked some of their forums...they think that he's pretty much useless with the ball at his feet, though a good header.

It's funny how some fans see their own players, ours included. People that watch the French league a lot i.e. journo's etc have said that he is good with both feet and able to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Hard to judge a player that's being moved on, either good or bad from just the fans. Normally some form of bias either way.

I have never understood why fans worry about the fees paid for players, or the wages paid to them for that matter. It’s not our money after all, or only indirectly anyway.

Part of it is that he plays so infrequently against good competition that everyone involved is drawing from a limited sample.

Opportunity cost. Teams have budgets, and if you spend big fees and big wages on players that are bad, that money isn't going to players that are good.

Similarly I always get a bit hacked off when people say things like ‘just pay him what he wants’ when it’s not their money....

Yeah, he's bound to look relatively limited technically when he's playing/played alongside Lemar, Silva, Falcao, Mbappe etc. Fans of Ligue 1 generally rate him and a lot of journalists who cover Ligue 1 do too so I pay more attention to them. From what I've seen he's an improvement on what we have.

Just because you play in a weaker league does not mean you can't play in a tougher one.

Absolutely. The concern is that Carrillo mostly only saw game action late in contests that were already decided, in cups against lower division opposition, or against the weakest teams in that weaker league. He certainly could come good, there just isn't much of a track record of success to evaluate there.

So the guy scored 28 goals in 118 league apps for Estudiantes and scored 18 in 65 for Monaco, now at the young age of 26. That's apparently worth 22 million pounds. It baffles the mind.

New PL TV money, buying from a wealthy club, player who is in relatively good form. All adds up. Pelle wasn't up to much at age 26 either...

Subtract the match against a French fourth division club and his form isn't exactly sparkling. I don't think those goals really upped the price, and his last start in the league was over two months ago.

Mostly, it's a pretty simple story: Monaco doesn't need the money, but they know that we really need a striker. So they could extract whatever they wanted from us, because we were running out of time and options.

Just don't really know what kind of ST people were expecting for £19 million is all.
