It's not a case of taking a wage and dividing it by half. The 50% rate only comes in for earnings over and above £150k p/a and incrementally less as you go down the brackets of pay. It's significantly more complicated than taking a gross figure and cutting it in half.

He'd hit GBP150k within two weeks of signing the contract.

Man says he is on EUR2 million a year. Net.

£4 million a year Gross = £76k per week gross.

Minus 50% Tax) – 38k - (applicable after a yearly gross salary of GBP150k
Minus NI – £2k

= £ 36k per week NET.
That's not how tax works - our tax system is graduated. It's not 50% on the whole lot - you can't just double his wage to work out gross from a net figure, for starters. Also, do you think he's stupid enough to pay that much tax? He's not on PAYE with a payslip each month, you know. Rich people hire good accountants so that they don't. His marginal tax rate will be really low, nowhere near 50%

Funny, that. Liverpool must be behind the times as they issue payslips with PAYE.

That's assumeing he's being treated as an employee of the club. I doubt it, he's probably self-employed and currently contracted to the club, allowing him a gazillion tax loopholes, for all we know his salary is coming via a corperation in the Cayman Islands or wherever. If his marginal tax rate isn't 20% or lower, he should fire his accountant.

UK footballers pay their tax the same as everyone else on their salary. Can you imagine the furor if they didn't. Especially in the current economic climate.
The only loophole they have is by pushing image rights to a shell company based elsewhere. Salary is PAYE. Sorry guys.

Precisely this. To be honest, I'm mainly very pleased that he's decided to come to Saints in order to actually play football, rather than potentially sitting on the bench at Liverpool or Spurs. That makes me feel good about the lad already.

John Arne Riise PAYE Payslip.

Hi guys. There's a new guy in charge now, he's called Nicola. He's pretty good with money and has set up a wage structure at the club that every other Premier League owner is jealous of. So forget trying to work out how much we might pay, or this WUM (it's not a bad attempt, I'll give him 7/10), because his contract will be 10 pages long and definitely wont include anything saying "£xx,000 a week". So if anyone else wants to think that Nicola would throw away all that to sign a player, or that this guy is joining us just because we are going to make him rich, then let them, because we know better. I can promise you that if we sign him, he will be on similar pay to our current top players. Rant over :D

What makes you think he's a WUM, is it he has only posted on this thread?. :p

Don't think you know what you're talking about. All it says on any contract is "we will pay you £xx000 a week thank you", FM taught me that.

People on Saints web seem to think not as close to signing for us as we thought and even mentioning Liverpool stepping up their interest !!!! Get him signed up NC.......
