Safe Standing/Rail Seating

Finally PL and Championship teams are being asked if they want to ‘pilot’ safe standing later this season. Clever ones have got ahead of the game and already installed the necessary kit.

My understanding is that essentially everybody gets a designated spot and has the option to sit or lean against the rail in front of them. I assume that if you buy a ticket for one of these spots you will be wanting to stand for the majority of the game. I don’t think these seats would expand the capacity of any stadium.

Hoos said in an interview that we would want to go down this route, but I doubt we will volunteer to be a pilot because it costs money to install the seats and there will have to be consultation with ST holders in the parts of the ground affected. If you want to install these you have to provide for both home and away fans. Upper Loft and Upper School End would be the obvious places to start, but I’d love to see (safe) standing crowds in all of the Loft, School End and Paddocks, like the old days. Remember, you always have the option to sit in these places (though I’m not sure about the view if everyone else is standing).

I’m a fan, having experienced this system (and old style terracing) at various European games. But that’s just me, so I’ve done a little poll.

Would love to but can’t see it happening at Loftus Rd. It’s long, long overdue.

I’d have thought the Lower Loft would make the most sense logistically but we daren’t move the half-empty family stand.

I heard someone describe it as 'giving people a choice', but if you're in one of these areas you either stand or you don't see anything. Just like it is currently when ignorant ****ers stand up in front of you. Grudgingly in favour.

That’s why I said I assume if you buy a ticket for one of these areas you want to stand. Though I have been at matches, such as Wolfsburg, (great stadium, **** town) where I think the vast majority of the stadium was rail seating and most people chose to sit, except in the hard core support areas behind the goal.

Surprising how many PL clubs have already installed these seats and presumably fixed them in the sitting position until given permission to use them as intended (the rule is the bit you sit on cannot be fixed either up or down. Apparently).

For some of us this would make our **** stadium slightly more comfortable I suspect. It’s physically impossible for me to sit down for the entirety of a match given the leg space available (adequate for a small midget) and I’m not that tall. And at the moment I don’t, officially, have the choice to stand. But I get your point.

For those who aren’t certain what we are talking about. Bit of an old film, but I like the idea of fixing the seats up in some areas to make safe terraces. I’ve seen a game at this stadium too (nice stadium and nice town) and was probably in the standing area, but I can’t remember much about it as you can also get excellent and excellently priced beer to take to your seat/standing place in German stadiums. Civilisation.

Being someone who is somewhat “vertically challenged” (so I’m led to believe), or often has young kids with me to a game, nothing pisses me off more than having someone in front of me who stands up in a seated area at every ****ing minute when the ball is pumped into the opponents half….and strangely enough I have had a few disagreements at matches because of it.
But if you pay for a seat, knowing what you’re getting and knowing that the person in front might be a 7 foot ex basketball professional with Afro hair….then I can’t see a problem. You get what you pay for. However they would then need to be stricter in other areas where people pay to sit down.

I did think of you mate. We could all chip in for a box for you to stand on….… Seriously though, perhaps rail seating areas might improve the discipline in the ‘proper’ seating areas.

Depends on how many people you squeeze in. If it’s not too crowded these were great places to stand. But when old style terraces are packed they are scary and deeply uncomfortable, even if adding incredibly to atmosphere. A few years ago I (and Ninesy and a couple of Leicester fans) were on the terraces at Dynamo Dresden along with 9000 other people in the K Block. It was brilliant especially because the fans sang for the whole 95 minutes, but when Dynamo scored I was momentarily terrified, one over excited and entirely innocent surge forward could have been disastrous. Of course everyone just bounced vertically up and down on the spot, no bother. Went back and did the same thing February last year pre lockdown.

During lockdown Dresden, for that season in the 3rd division (promoted at the end) struggled financially with no fans allowed in the stadium (capacity 32,000 and usually close to full) and asked fans to buy ‘ghost tickets’ for a cup match against Darmstadt, at €5 each (standing usually costs about €13). They sold 72,000 tickets for a game no one could attend. And lost 3-0.

Would prefer sitting, but got a much more enjoyable experience in the days of terrace standing. Being over 6' is a challenge as the leg room at KPFS is so poor that you end up sitting sideways. Maybe if the seats had no back that would help.

I'm more than happy to stand but there was a girl sat behind me who can't have been much older than 8 and I'd have rather ruined her day if I'd stood up all match. We were probably only in the 10th or so row from the front too. He refused any polite request to sit down and it got slightly heated. All hugs and friends when OBZ scored of course.

Anyway. I'm all for it. Upper loft would be fun.

That’s what pisses me off…the jumped up little ****s who stand up at the slightest whim and don’t give a **** who’s behind them, ruining everyone else’s day as well.
And then they have the audacity to have a go at YOU, because you’re obviously not a real fan as real fans stand up and sing.

Bottom line is it won't work if fans have choice in the same area. I believe the rail seats were initially brought in at first to comply with UEFA regulations that stated games must be all seated, clubs converted standing to seated in European matches and back to standing for domestic games.

I've been to England games at Wembley where in the lower levels the vast majority of fans stand but up in the 'Gods' most are seated. I think safe standing areas should be in all grounds and mainly behind the goals as that traditionally is where terraces were with the rails fixed for standing only but can be changed if required for whatever reason. I think we're a bit stymied at HQ with the family stand a real pain, perhaps shifting it would solve the bigger problem of where we start with this...

I don’t get your first sentence Soops, probably being dim. I assumed that ‘safe standing’ would be in limited areas and everyone would know it. If you want to sit down you wouldn’t buy a ticket there.

Exactly, there wouldn't be an option in the safe standing area. The rails can be changed to provide seating if necessary as in European games...
