I may have this completely wrong but didn't Dragan say that being thrown out of the playoffs messed up the process? There was a short window (to offer an extension) that opened after the last game of the season which would have been the playoff final. When we got excluded the last game became the semi final which meant the window had already closed. Saints approached Stewart's agent who told them they were too late.
If that is wrong I apologise, but I don't think Saints were at fault.
That's what I saw too. We had 5 days after the last game of the season to trigger the extension but that got messed up by the playoff nonsense.

That's right. Just an unfortunate circumstance of being kicked out.

I'm honestly not that fussed about him leaving. Good player but he's nearly 30 with a wretched injury record. Hopefully with the signing of Larin SR have ended their record of buying absolute turds for strikers once and for all.

A fit Stewart is a far better player than Larin, who the jury is very much still out on. Expect him to come back after the world cup 5 stone heavier and very unmotivated now he has a full time deal.

But yeah I think this is one of those rare occasions in football where every party has probably done the right thing

That was the deadline to trigger the extension wasn't it? We could have just triggered it before that point but presumably we were waiting to see if we would be a PL club or not, suggesting that if we were, we wouldn't have triggered it. Which to me is silly, as although we'd have needed a new first choice striker for the PL, Stewart would have been fine for the squad. So although the deadline for the extension being messed up wasn't our fault. We should have just triggered it sooner.

But Stewart wasn’t though for some games. Larin is exactly what we needed at times. Do you have inside knowledge on Larin? Does he have a history of getting contracts and then ballooning? Seems a strange comment.

I think he'll be very difficult to replace given we haven't received a fee.

We don't simply need a back up to Larin, we need someone as good as or better than him to effectively rotate the two.

A big part of our success second half
of the season was the fact we had two strikers both performing at a very good level. If one was having a bad day then the other could come on and have an impact.

No insider knowledge of course just based on Mallorca fans comments about his professionalism and how he was over weight during his time there. He is on the larger side for a footballer so can see it being possible if he isn’t dialled in, hopefully he is and there’s nothing to worry about.

I still have reservations about his ability based on his entire career rather than the half season he has spent here, but hopefully it’s just my usual optimism shining through and he continues what he was doing last season.

Think Tonda will want a similar player to Stewart with height and a bit more physicality.
Was quite impressed with Kjerrumgaard on loan at Watford last season from Udinese, definitely a physical presence. Can’t see him wanting a smaller striker than Larin.
But knowing Saints they’ll probably start bigging up Downs again?

Can definitely see Downs being the rotation guy. I highly doubt the club want to give up on him after a poor 6 month spell. Then Archer (if he’s still here) as a different kind of striker. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Archer leave though in which case we will need someone else

Granted he seems a bit of a journeyman,
but if was Tonda magic dust that did it which Larin enthused on, then that needs to continue. Hopefully the prem is motivation enough.

BBD might be an option too.

This. It reads like we didn’t have the option to trigger the extension until after the final game. And then there was a window. And that changed due to the issues

And surely no one is claiming we should have offered him a multi year contract extension prior to the play offs. Especially not when we thought we were protected by the clause
