There is also the possibility Stewart just didn’t want to stay. Be interesting if we ever hear what sort of offer was made to him after the extension clause was voided
Must’ve been something way bigger than what was on the table there tbh
I assume they've factored in how much he's been able to play for us and possibly how likely he is to get injured again. I looked him up on transfermarkt and did some very crude maths and I'd say he's only been on the pitch for something like 15% of the minutes we've played since he signed.Kinda with you. Given how much it will cost to by a top championship striker, what £10-£15m, say we paid Ross £2mm a year for 2 years is only £4mm. We would then need to pay wages of new striker. I think I need to apply for the role as Saints Finance Director as the numbers on this make no sense to me.
Wasn't there also some suggestion that we wanted to do something around wages because he's been injured so much?I meant more what we offered. The assumption seems to be that the club hasn’t offered him a multi year deal, so he interesting if it ever comes out that we did offer him a two year deal or something but he chose to go elsewhere
That would be classed as an assault.Club will be sending Salt after him with a baseball bat to reclaim his medical expenses now.
It's a highly charged situation, so assault and battery actually....That would be classed as an assault.
No insider knowledge of course just based on Mallorca fans comments about his professionalism and how he was over weight during his time there. He is on the larger side for a footballer so can see it being possible if he isn’t dialled in, hopefully he is and there’s nothing to worry about.
I still have reservations about his ability based on his entire career rather than the half season he has spent here, but hopefully it’s just my usual optimism shining through and he continues what he was doing last season.
But what if your new bestie Dragan said I have all the faith in Downs.....**** him. Since football is now played out in court/legal chambers we should sue him for the pay he took while contributing **** all.
I swear to god if they're even thinking Downs is the answer.....
Then I'd be looking to be having him committed. But what if your new bestie Dragan said I have all the faith in Downs.....
I do get this argument.. But if Ross was actually fit we wouldn't need 2 strikers of comparable ability.I think he'll be very difficult to replace given we haven't received a fee.
We don't simply need a back up to Larin, we need someone as good as or better than him to effectively rotate the two.
A big part of our success second half
of the season was the fact we had two strikers both performing at a very good level. If one was having a bad day then the other could come on and have an impact.
I'd take Libby's comment further - a big part of our success Jan onwards was we had two players (or spare) in key positions that were 'starters' and they didnt mind swapping out if it wasn't working or they were tired. Subs didn't weaken us.I do get this argument.. But if Ross was actually fit we wouldn't need 2 strikers of comparable ability.
Ultimately, he was a poor signing for 2 years and had a solid 3rd season. So overall a decent saints career, neither good nor bad.
No ill feeling to the guy, I spoke to him in Winchester in April and he was a sound bloke, but he's hardly been good enough to miss..
Whether or not he's missed will depend massively on our striking options next season.I do get this argument.. But if Ross was actually fit we wouldn't need 2 strikers of comparable ability.

Stewart/Larin/Archer (3 for one spot)
Leo/Fellows/Edozie/Matsuki/Robinson (5 for 2 spots)
Flynn/Casper/Charles/Bragg (4 for 2 spots)
Stephens/Wood/THB/Quashie (4 for 2 spots)
Peretz/Bazunu
Ok joking about the keepers. But the others I stand by.
This is why I am not sure what the Bellingham/Rodgers argument for England is about. Start with one and brig the other on.
Exactly. This is a decision it'll always be hard to judge and whether it turns out good or bad for Saints will depend on how he's replaced. If he injures himself at the World Cup and/or we sign someone better - or at least similar - nobody will care we released a player who spent the vast majority of his time here in the physio room. If he stays fit, scores 20 goals for someone like Boro or West Ham and we sign another Downs type then everybody will be saying this was a ridiculous decision, how can you release the Loch Ness Drogba etc etc.Whether or not he's missed will depend massively on our striking options next season.
I agree a lot about the sentiment, but as a club with a strong history of a good strikers, we've had a Lee Barnard or Billy Sharp to a Rickie Lambert.I'd take Libby's comment further - a big part of our success Jan onwards was we had two players (or spare) in key positions that were 'starters' and they didnt mind swapping out if it wasn't working or they were tired.
