I knew a high court judge that was a regular in my old village pub. Lovely old guy, hugely intelligent ( but you wouldn’t want to be the first one up on Monday if Wales had lost over the weekend)

We were discussing the Lester Piggot case, and he said to me: ‘In my opinion the judge got the sentencing wrong. It’s clear what’s important to this man - money! No, I would have fined him £3mill and given him a suspended sentence with jail if he failed to pay in full’

Ronaldo is the same. Why put him in jail? Hit the greedy **** in his pocket, where it obviously hurts him most. And hit him hard!

Poor old Lester was very hard done by imo. Think of all the crooks in public life walking around unscathed, and he not only got bird, but also lost his OBE.

I understand what you are saying but my thoughts are our prisons would be half empty if everyone was released for far lessor crimes.

It's mind boggling that he rips the state off for 14 Million when he can as you seem to acknowledge afford it.

I had a woman beg me for some food not long ago, i naturally made sure she was fed, that woman may well go on to commit crime in the future, will society be so understanding when she ends up in court.

It just seems to me a high profile footballer is treated differently to a smack head on the street, the latter greatful for the prison cell accommodation.

The hit him for the €14mill, with another €14mill in fines.

Is it 14M fines, I thought it was 4M?...fair enough, i still think he should have done time. Be interesting to see how any of his sponsors react to his crime.

People used to tell me how generous he was to charities, glad he went on to prove me right that he is just another self obsessed greedy fooker.

And, that’s his weakness. He’s greedy and obsessed with money and fame.

Hit him where it hurts!

Madrid will pay the fine, he'll never do the prison sentence as it's a first offence and Ronnie will leave Spain. The Spanish Gov't will lose out on huge amounts of tax as a result of him leaving.

Win/Win for Ronnie.

Win/Lose for the sangria slurpers.

If I were the judge I would make damn sure the money came from him, not Madrid.

Think about how many batons Madrid could buy for 14M <laugh>

It'll come directly from Ronaldo of course.

It's probably already been paid to Ronnie in bonuses. Last season he wanted out and basically refused to score. Rumour has it they agreed to pay his bills and he could leave this summer, so he started banging them in again.

Aren’t all these players who run into this situation just I’ll inforned or careless?

I can’t imagine a scenario where an account, or financial advisor or whatever would advise these players to pay their taxes and then have player say - nah, I’ll risk it. It’s only millions I’m trying to hide from the books here.

How come his accountant and his agent aren’t being fined if Ronaldo isn’t aware of what’s happening?
To me it seems that RM and Barca know what goes on as well, and they all should be fined.

I can't imagine for a second that Ronaldo had a clue what his agents and employees were doing in his name.

I bet the guy has never withdrawn a euro from a cash machine in his life!

I think any half way intelligent would make themselves aware of their own financial circumstances. Apart from the tax situation, his agents could be ripping him blind if he was so disinterested in his own affairs,

Ya. They’re athletes. Maybe not even a question of intelligence, but they just never informed themselves on the issue.

But wouldn’t it take only the one player making headlines with threats of jail time or millions in fines for all other players to realize that they’d better be on top of that? At least find a legit professional to manage your finances in this regard.

The impression given on some of these guys, particularly the superstars of some sports, are that they live in a bubble, surrounded by a team who do every single thing for them short of wiping their arses.

They have no concept of the real world around them nor of the day to day / longer term decisions made on their behalf.
