So he is finally gone, question will you miss home here and how do you think he will do at Southampton. Personally I am not sad to see the back of him and if he had stayed I wouldn’t have been that bothered either. As for his job at Southampton I think they will be too 10 at best under Martin. No plan B and defensively inept. But should have the quality in their squad to be top half.
If he gets a start like he had with us then I can't see the Saints' fans being as patient as we were. They will probably end up being a top 6 challenger but not the auto promotion spots. As TLF says it is the defensive frailty and the lack of a Plan B that should worry them
We won 34 out of 92 league games under Martin - yet, if you listened to his marketing/PR machine, he was a World-beater. Seems like Southampton may have bought into it ….
They can’t even bring themselves to mention the Swans in their statement: Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that Russell Martin has been appointed as its new Men’s First Team Manager. The 37-year-old joins on a contract that runs until 2026 at St Mary’s, after the club reached an agreement to secure his services. Martin has spent the past two seasons as head coach of the Welsh club, earning widespread acclaim for the team’s progress and style of play during that time, as he led them to within three points of an unlikely Championship playoff berth in the most recent campaign. Prior to his time there, Martin impressed in his first managerial role, spending a season-and-a-half at MK Dons in League One, overseeing significant improvement in the side’s performances. Southampton FC Chairman, Henrik Kraft, said: “We are extremely excited to welcome Russell to Southampton. “Russell was the stand-out candidate throughout our recruitment process and we are confident his strong track record, alongside the experienced leadership of our new Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, will deliver great results.” Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, added: “Russell has shown fantastic qualities in his managerial career so far and is someone who we believe will thrive in the great environment we have here at Southampton. “He is a fantastic fit for what we are trying to achieve, with a strong record of developing and nurturing young, talented players to fulfil their potential and deliver results on the pitch. “We can’t wait for Russell to get started working with the team at Staplewood as we get ready for the new season.”
Neve got into the whole Martin thing, the way some had this love fest with him. I thought he should have been sacked back in February.
Our board have GOT to give him time , after the farce that last season was , if they go down the same path this year , they ( board) will a laughing stock . FWIW , I like to think we will finish top half and hopefully do much better the season after . Anyway I hope the legal wrangling won’t affect / cause any bad blood amongst the supporters . I think that if saints were speaking to RM while we were not mathematically down , then you should get the money . if we were mathematically down when talks began , you shouldn’t get the money . Just my opinion . Good luck for next season , well except when we play each other .
Hi Jasper, I understand what you are saying but if the terms of RM’s contract states a PL team, then you were still playing PL football when you approached him and verbally offered him the job. So the higher compensation cost should apply
Yes that’s true , I suppose it all depends on the exact wording of his contract , and I have no idea what that was
Hi Jasper.....numbers here. In the statement it says he was your boards Number 1 stand out candidate. Who were the other candidates? Sorry for the edit but just thinking......Was RM approached by your board or did he apply? By using the word candidate your board implies he applied for the position.
I suppose the only thing for me is I would have sacked him in February but at least hanging on to him we managed to con Southampton into giving us 1.2m for a very very average manager.
