The stadium hasn't been a genuine financial burden since 2010, when you paid off most of the debt by selling the Highbury flats. Any self restraint since then has been driven entirely by Wenger's unwillingness to spend and top players' unwillingness to come to Arsenal.

Ultimately if Mourinho can get us back into the CL then this season will count as a success, after Moyes and LVG's period of managed decline. I would consider it average if he matches LVG's last year, i.e. European qualification and a major trophy (not just the LC), and a failure with anything else.

And there's the problem. Any Utd fan would admit that the last three seasons have been far below the standard we expect, and have largely been a disaster.
Yet your ambition is limited to having won one more trophy and had two more 4th placed finishes than a disastrous Utd team. Even Leicester have outdone you for genuine success over that period, and here you are crowing about it.

Moot point really - neither club would have ever found themselves in such a position where a 200m spend was required, particularly in the case of Barca - theirs is a constant rolling programme of investment and development

Tbh I'm pleased we won the FA Cup last season and IF it was a choice between that and top 4, I would still choose the FA Cup. BUT the real question is why couldn't we achieve both? In the 2nd year of the manager's tenure with the squad he had he ultimately failed.
Apply the same principle to Mourinho. Why shouldnt Mourinho achieve both? The EL and EC and finish top 4? While technically that SHOULD be possible with the squad he has, if he managed to achieve that in his first season that would be an excellent achievement imo. So realistically going back to your question, if he achieved only the 2 trophies I'd still be happy.

Three seasons of failure will do that to a club.
If City finished 7th, 4th and 5th over the next three seasons I think you'd find them spending a heck of a lot more than £150m to get back into the top four.
Not here to start a fight but when Chelsea City and all the new upstarts spent they quickly forget cl qualification but within two years were challenging for the title..Chelsea after abrahimovic took over won it the very next season,real with galacticos part two got their swagger and were regular cl semi finalists,psg became a power house,city won the fa cup and in the third season were champions...There was quite a bit of ****ing up in managerial changes and the transfer window for you guys that resulted in these setbacks,even when the likes of malaga and monaco spent they immediately catapulted though they rolled it back since then..Spending 100m+ every season and winning an fa cup and ending is the top 4 only once is very very uncommon,yes the competition has increased but it mostly showed only this season but over the last 3 seasons had you just taken care of teams that you should have beat,you would have done far better.Especially last season you should have been 4th.

You aren't really starting a fight by pointing out the obvious! I don't think you'll find a Utd fan around who would argue with the assertion that we have been uncommonly poor the last three seasons given the money spent. But that is the situation we are in, and what we have to work with.
And don't forget how uncommonly good we were for the ten years before that. After Abramovich changed English football with his money, we spend around £35m a year for the next ten years and won five league titles and the CL, way ahead of City and Chelsea who were spending easily twice as much. When you consider Arsenal and Liverpool both spent around £30m a year over that period and won one title, one CL and two FA Cups between them then it's not hard to see how well we overachieved in the last ten years of SAF's reign.
Ultimately a period of underachievement will often follow one of overachievement for a large organisation - people get set in their ways and it needs the right person to move them on from past successes. Moyes and LVG weren't the right people so we have gone backwards at a rapid rate. But as you note, it took Chelsea and City a good couple of years to forget about CL qualification after their money (City didn't quality for the CL for two years after they got all their cash), so if it takes Mourinho a couple of years to rebuild us after our past failures then that's a price we will have to pay.
