I agree with the general principle that you're putting forward, but I'm not sure it happens.
In order for one of these claims to get anywhere it seems to need plenty of evidence.

I suspect that I've got an idea of what the recent accusation against the other player was/is.
I'm relying almost exclusively on dubious sources though, so it's utterly unreliable.
None of it's like the Greenwood thing where we've all got a decent idea of what went on.
