Arsenal's biggest problem was losing David Dein.
He was effectively Wenger's Director of Football, plus their Daniel Levy. They failed to replace him in either capacity.
The manager gradually lost his way afterward, while the quality of signings dropped substantially.

They need to either bring in a manager who wants a project and is prepared to make massive changes or a DOF to overhaul their whole system.
They've got loads of revenue and the attraction of London, but a lot of their squad simply aren't good enough.
They've offered massive contracts to substandard players and they're paying the price for it.

The other obvious problem was making Stan Kroenke a majority shareholder which, funnily enough, Dein did not want to happen and resigned shortly after that was verbally agreed (IIRC).
That being said, admittedly, we have made enough money without relying on his external investment to be a competitive side. Our revenues have been high. It's just a shame we ended up pissing it up the wall on rubbish players and lucrative contracts for players who didn't warrant it.

There's only so long you can get away with poor decisions before it comes to bite you on the arse.

We are finished as a top club. It's over. We've had our moment in the sun for several years in the late 90s-early 2000s, had the gravy train of CL money to stop the decline from being more instant, but it's too late to reverse it. We are only going to slip further and further down the table.

Not only do we have to catch up the other top 6 clubs, but now we need to worry about Newcastle, Everton, Leicester and Wolves too. I saw this coming well before we finished 5th in 2017. The gradual erosion of our standards and expectations became more and more obvious as each season went by for the last 6-7 years. The FA Cups gave us a false sense of security, but now we are about to get our just desserts for failing to act when we needed to. No-one had the foresight to see what a cancer Kroenke would be to Arsenal, despite the performances of his other sporting franchises (prior to the last year). No-one had the courage to inform the board that Wenger had a dictatorial thirst for power to the detriment of the fabric of the club. No-one truly acknowledged how our identity had been lost in amongst all the internal politics. No-one had the foresight to realise we were destined to be failures the longer this inaction to our downward trajectory continued.

I am not saying this to get sympathy from you. I am not saying this to get reassurances that "we'll be fine" because, let's not kid ourselves, we won't be. Not with the way the club is currently set up. Not with the owner we currently have.

I am saying
Excellent post Brian <ok>

To be honest, as fans, there's not much we can do anyway. No amount of protesting or empty seats will convince Kroenke to sell up, as we have already seen over the last 6 years. And even if he did, the valuation of our club is too high meaning it is more likely to deter potential investors. Newcastle are worth £350m. We are worth around 4 times that amount. It ain't happening. We are stuck with KSE for the foreseeable future.

All we can do is support the team, moan when **** doesn't go our way after the game, get bantered off by rival fans and just pray that better times will come.

Wallowing in midtable will certainly be a new experience for me, as like you said, I've never had to experience anything like that before. But maybe it will help me appreciate the club more and maybe it will give senior figures at our club a big reality check. It's a cliche, but sometimes you need things to get worse before they get better. You need to take the good with the bad.

Nothing lasts forever at the end of the day.

I honestly ain't wumming but celebrating the bare minimum was institutionalised at Arsenal from the minute Wenger claimed top 4 was a trophy back in 2009.

I remember the selfies being put online after winning games.

When we were piss poor under Sherwood your keeper pulled a phone out at fulltime and they took photos on the pitch. Can you imagine SAF or Maureen allowing his players to do that?

After beating Leicester in their title winning season their were dressing room selfies all over social media.

When you came second Wenger gave a piss taking interview saying it was in Arsenals DNA to finish above spurs.

Your players were wildly celebrating in their cars driving away from the Emirates after winning the NLD this season and that ended up all over social media.

At half time when you were winning 2 nil at home to newcastle Bellerin came on the pitch and said it was good to see tottenham are back in Arsenals shadow.

Arsenal ignored the warning signs of their better players leaving to win things, were arrogant in believing they'd always be a top 4 club and are now making weird arsed panicked decisions that are not working.

You remind me of Liverpool in the early 1990s tbh!

On top of everything else, the club itself started leaning in to the fans whose outlook on a season was about the same as the type of Newcastle fan who would be content if they were relegated from the Premier League as that still meant they finished above Middlesbrough and Sunderland - to the point they started to produce merchandise to appeal to them

Watching those ticked off Arsenal fans and reading comments from and about other teams, including ours!.....makes you think doesn't it? Hitler really didn't stand a chance against crazy Brits, did he...….and the ladies would ( and did) give him a black eye too!

You are still a wealthy club and as the business model (top 4 qualification) is eroded, then surely even your directors will need to be bold. This'll start hitting them in the pocket and up with that they will not put. Surely.
